Seeking Answers, finding martial arts politics

Martial Arts Politics Seeking Answers Finding
learn answers, without politics within the martial arts
learn lineage differences with no wing chun politics

Have you ever felt like something was off in your martial training? Have you ever wondered how to fix it, make it stronger, create a better you as a fighter and defender within your Close Quarter Combat or Wing Chun training? Have you ever wondered why certain things work within your Close Quarter Combat or Wing Chun training and how to make them better, gain more power and increase your confidence behind them?  Have you ever wondered what the explanations from other lineage schools would tell you and how they actually fix those issues and questions.

(this article can not be copied or used on any other site, permission only to share link) Every one of us have, some of us have passed it off as not being long enough in the system to understand it or have the skills behind it.  Others have blamed themselves or even the system for not having the answers to make it right.  Due to politics, lineage alignments, the rarity of finding a well-versed high-level Wing Chun instructor and school near you it is hard to find answers. Martial arts political and technological reasons, the history of Karate is frequently obscure and difficult to understand.  It can be extremely difficult to look outside your lineage and find answers unless you have a open minded instructor or you no longer have a teacher.  Understanding and seeking out the answers of other lineages should be done after you have a clear understanding of your own lineage and what it has to teach you.  My journey and the books I am creating are a combination of the lineage lines and answers I have found answers to. The martial arts politics is very difficult to understand. Every instructor has an answer for the different aspects of Wing Chun but much like the S.A.T’s there is only one or two best answers you have to decide between them.

Instead of wondering as to the reasons of a technique and how to make it stronger I am seeking out different lineages and schools, the information and differences. Everybody wants to find the martial arts politics. Bringing all this information back to one place for one clear source so practitioners can grow.  You can only get better in Wing Chun if you understand why and can then grow from that understanding with focused purpose.  Applications that may seem irrelevant to one instructor and even taken out may be clearly explained and fully understood by another.

The great part about online articles, websites, books, magazine or online documentation is that any lineage can read and understand it furthering themselves because they were touched by the knowledge of it.

Due to politics you may not be able to go to or even train at another school without upsetting your instructor. Martial arts politics is a technique, how can i make strong this arts. So my hope is to tie us together as Wing Chun practitioners in the friendship of knowledge and open training/information. The information contained within our lineage line and its ties to other lineage lines is the life times of many Master’s and Grandmaster’s that I have had the pleasure to study with.  They opened their minds and skills to assist me in becoming a better fighter and practitioner.  It wasn’t cheap to get this information and I hope you appreciate it.  Anyone willing and wanting to learn Wing Chun combat is welcomed within our Wing Chun Kung Fu school.

As close-quarter combat Wing Chun practitioner’s the only thing we should be focused on is the development of this martial art as a leader in close-quarter combative’s.  As I have given credit to those who have helped me I ask that if you learned anything from this book that every time you reference this material you also reference its source and where it came from.

“The only way to gain the truth and depth of something is to support those who have sought it out.

Setting Goals and Making Leaders

Setting Goals and Making Leaders

lakeland-afterschool-program-afterschool-martial-arts-lakeland-florida-kung-fu
lakeland afterschool program in the fine arts
setting goals, making leaders with wing chun martial arts

A stripe on a belt or a higher grade in the classroom are part of the same goal setting process. Setting goals help children plan for the future and “think smart”. Long term planning skills are developed and children widen their understanding how things work in a big picture. Setting goals skills allow children to choose what they want to achieve and how to go about doing it. Children start asking important questions of “How do I balance my work and play time to do what I want to do?”, “Will my actions help or hurt me for getting what I want?” and “I need help to reach my target. Who can ask for  from knowing they will assist me in a positive way?”. More concentration and effort is put into their actions. This is the early formation of organization skills.

The size of the goal is not important it is the act of executing one. Setting goals is a life skill. The demands of life only increase and a strong intrinsic motivation will help ones confidence continue to grow. Even if they do not realize the gains they’re making its a great habit to instill early on.

Everyone is likely to face some stumbling blocks along the way. It can be demoralizing not to accomplish a goal. An environment of comfort and support is created through our students and parental involvement. Children realize they never have to face problems alone and can always lean on someone they trust for help. Working in a group to accomplish our personal goals, building confidence and making life long friends is all achievable through the Wing Chun system!

A lakeland afterschool program is a great place to start and build the skills a child will use for the rest of their lives.  Finding a place that makes your child accomplish and achieve makes everyone a winner!

Wing Chun Life

wing chun lifeWing Chun Life

My name is Justin Cibin, and I love the art of life of Wing Chun.  My interest was sparked some 16 years ago when a few high-school friends and I attended a demonstration of the wooden dummy.  I was amazed with the power and beauty of the art but wasn’t mature enough to actually focus on learning it at that time.  Fast forward to present date, and I’m head over heels, (sometimes literally) in this art.  My first impression after trying it was that it was extremely difficult for me to get a shot in on the other students with my standard brawling style. Then, after tussling with Sifu Och I could tell that I had much to learn and the ability to do it.   With the submission of this paper I’ve dedicated roughly 18 months progressing through white, yellow, orange, and hopefully green sash.  I can’t imagine using anything else to protect myself and loved ones. Wing Chun builds character, strength, and focus.   It demands a mix of extreme attention to bio-mechanics and willingness to push through pain and confusion.  It takes a strong leader with an amazing amount of passion to successfully pass these skills on.  My fist conversation with Sifu Och last about 30 minutes. Being a person of passion, it’s easy for me to pick up on those who have the same trait and let me tell you that you haven’t met a more passionate person. He’ll get the best out of you, and if that’s not your deal, you’ll probably quit.

Wing Chun helped me through my greatest challenge.  Four years ago, my marriage collapsed and was followed by one of the worst and longest court experiences you could ask for ranging from a vindictive ex-wife out for money, and possibly my very own sole.  I had to overcome the obvious and blatant attacks occurring to both my 8 year old son Michael and 6 year old daughter Isabella. For me this wasn’t just an emotional hurdle, but a very real physical attack at times from a once close person. It was like being clubbed down by some mugger in the street for all that I had including your sanity. I tell you this because to gain my bearings I did two things.  First, I found a great church, and second I found Wing Chun. It’s given me new tools to lean on.  It’s all about a strong base, strong structure, relaxation, and power at the correct moments.  It’s about humbleness, consideration, respect, and the ability to help defend those who cannot do so for themselves.

justin-cibin-orlando-ip-man-wing-chunOnce you start to apply these sound principles, you simply stop applying the unsound ones that invited the negative behaviours and results. It showed be that it’s necessary to ask questions and then be quiet and humble to learn the lesson. If you don’t seek knowledge it doesn’t come!   There are plenty of obstacles to slow you down in the art. For me it’s about a four hour round trip once or twice a week.  I have a thousand legitimate reasons to quit; two small demanding children, a full time career in the software industry with SAP (third largest software company in the world), a crazy long drive full of bumper to bumper traffic, physical body pain, and monetary constraints.

Wing Chun taught me that quitting equals selling yourself short and if you can tolerate selling yourself short, what’s to stop you for selling your loved one shorts when it counts.  What’s to stop you from letting others sell you short – nothing!  You have to learn how to be your biggest fan, respect yourself, and have faith that Christ will align you to what you’re meant to do. This is the road towards an enriched life, and I am blessed that Wing Chun has its role in my journey.  Today, I can feel the physical changes in my body in terms of having more control and a general sense of being able to protect myself and loved ones because of Wing Chun.

I have lost a ton of weight, improved my life and the drive from deep Orlando has been worth it every time.

I’m not sure why your not down here training but it is never to late to start.

I look forward to seeing you in class

Justin Cibin

This Chinese martial art in Downtown Lakeland Fl can provide you and your family with serious self defense discipline.  For people that want to get in shape and gain real self defense for their family.  Whether you are looking for a a understanding of the martial arts or you want a martial art that allows you to use intense striking and trapping techniques during close range in-combat scenarios, Wing Chun Kung Fu in downtown lakeland is your centre for training. Wing Chun involves stick defense, knife defense, gun defense and extreme hand to hand combat.

Wing Chun martial arts started more than 300 years ago as a closely-guarded secret. Not too many people know that the popular Bruce Lee was himself was a student of Ip Man the modern founder and Grandmaster who taught the young Bruce Lee the art of Wing Chun. Bruce Lee has only ever had two formal martial art instructors, both were Wing Chun Kung Fu; Ip Man and Wong Shun Leung (the combat fighter of Ip Man). After so many years, and  especially after the 2010 release of the Ip Man Movies from Hong Kong it gave the world a taste of Wing Chun fighting in action.  Wing Chun is now being practiced all over the world, this martial arts discipline used to be limited to only a few very dedicated, worthy and lucky students.

Men and women, no matter their built can learn Wing Chun. You will be surprised to learn that this discipline was created by five shaolin master’s with the most influence coming  from a woman named Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun. She taught the art of Wing Chun to Yim Wing Chun, a female student after whom the martial arts was named after.

If you have seen the once inch punch of Bruce Lee then you have seen a sample of the close range power of Wing Chun. Most students are wary about learning Wing Chun for fear that it is weak as it has been influenced and created by women. But after they discover that this is the discipline behind Bruce Lee’s popular moves, his creation of Jeet Kune Do, and that many martial art styles have tried to take from this quick and direct system of combat they start to think differently. More and more students are starting to seek out realistic street self defense and are being encouraged to seek out and enroll in Wing Chun classes.

This system of self defense involves very effective and direct counter attacks and was developed to protect the weak and small against the large and brute strength of other martial arts.  Wing Chun uses essential techniques to keep you safe and protected.  Wing Chun focuses on the use of quick combat, stance, structure and balance to increase a fighters power and attacking ability. Be just like a bamboo tree, deeply rooted and yet it easily yields and becomes flexible. When pressure is applied the bamboo tree yields, bends and allows might and for to redirect around it though it is not weak because of this but instead becomes stronger.  This is why in China, the Wing Chun system of self defense combat is now mandatory anti-terrorist self defense training for all airline stuartists and crew members.

Come down and see our new remodelled facilty and while you are there feel free to try out a class for only $10 bucks!

Why join Sifu Och’s Wing Chun Kung Fu training

Wing Tsun, Ving Tsun or Wing Chun. Whatever name you wish to call it, this Chinese martial art concept is a serious self defense discipline that allows any age or gender to use intense striking, low kicking and trapping techniques during close range in-combat. Wing Chun involves stick defense, knife defense, gun defense and extreme hand to hand combat.

Our philosophy is that if the fight is long range use a gun, if the fight is close range use Wing Chun. – Sifu Justin Och

Wing Chun martial arts started more than 300 years ago as a closely-guarded secret. Developed to protect the weakened chinese during the rule of the Manchurian’s during the 1700’s. You can join Sifu Och’s for wing chun kung fu training. This style was made for war, espionage, knife, empty hand and even guns.  This is the last modern Shaolin gung fu style to be created within the Shaolin Temples prior to there destruction.  Made by one woman and four men, all Shaolin Master’s in there own right this style was created as a complete system with one aim, protect the weak and innocent from those that would oppress them.

Not too many people know that the popular Bruce Lee was himself was a student of Ip Man the modern founder and Grandmaster who taught the young Bruce Lee the art of Wing Chun. Bruce Lee has only ever had two formal martial art instructors, both were Wing Chun Kung Fu training; Ip Man and Wong Shun Leung (the combat fighter of Ip Man).

This system of self defense, which involves brutal and efficient counter attacks and was developed for war. Wing Chun has often been compared to Krav Maga which is also a discipline with lots of contact combat.  The two systems have alot in common.  Krav Maga was created based on wrestler and boxer Imi Lichtenfeld’s skills in street fighting. Lichtenfeld used this discipline to fight the Bratislava fascist group and at the same time defend the Jewish. It is thus understandable that this technique is widely utilized by the Israeli Defense Forces.  Both the Wing Chun and the Krav Maga use techniques that are essential in street fighting.

After watching master’s in this system you can definitely see how great it is for street self defense.  Wing Chun focuses on the use of quick combat, stance, structure and balance to increase a fighters power and attacking ability.

Wing Chun kung fu training makes use of your entire body.  Wing Chun kung fu training wants you to use all of the body’s tendons and muscles to find a true overall strength that links every movement, skills and technique by reinforced body and mind mechanics. By becoming aware of your movements and your body’s strengths, you will be able to derive a true strength and power that is not based on muscle and power alone.

There are many reasons why you should choose Wing Chun Kung Fu training and one of those reasons is true self awareness.   I look forward to seeing you in class. – Sifu Justin Och

Bad behaviour gets the chop: Hong Kong airlines Wing Chun teaches kung fu to cabin staff

By Ted Thornhill

An airline has come out fighting against unruly behaviour on its planes – by teaching kung fu to its cabin crew.   In a world first, lessons in hong kong airlines wing chun combat are being made compulsory for all stewards and stewardesses who work for Hong Kong Airlines. Hong Kong airlines Wing Chun teaches kung fu to cabin staff fr their safety purpose. The carrier hopes that training in the deadly martial art will help its staff deal with disruptive passengers more effectively and give them more confidence when faced with violence.

Big hit: Hong Kong Airlines’ kung fu lessons are proving hugely popular with its cabin crew

There are around three incidents involving disruptive passengers every week, according to Eva Chan, the carrier’s deputy general manager of corporate communication.

What’s more, one stewardess has already put some of her new-found Bruce Lee skills into action on a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong.   ‘One of the passengers was sick but he was probably drunk and felt unwell. Hong Kong airlines Wing Chun trains their airline’s staff in kung fu techniques. The crew member attended to him and she realised her fitness was helping her, especially because the guy was quite heavy,’ Chan told the Sunday Morning Post.

‘Normally, a female cabin crew can’t handle a fat guy, especially if he’s drunk, but because of the training, she can handle it quite easily.’   Wing chun has been practiced in China for hundreds of years. It involves learning striking and grappling moves and simultaneous defence and attack. Hong Kong airlines Wing Chun is the first airline which give kung fu training to your staff. ‘Wing chun can be used in small, confined spaces so it’s suited for an airplane,’ according to Wing chun instructor Katherine Cheung Cheung. ‘It’s easy to learn but difficult to master.’

Some people may think teaching cabin staff the skill is plane crazy – but the Hong Kong Airlines recruits are getting a real kick out of it.   Lumpy Tang, 22, said she never imagined kung fu would be part of the job and now feels much more confident going about her duties while airborne.   ‘We were surprised in the beginning, but after a few lessons we really liked wing chun,’ Tang told the Post.   ‘You cannot predict what will happen on the plane, so wing chun is good because it’s so fast. I feel safer because I can defend myself and I’m really happy to be one of the first cabin crew to learn wing chun in the world.’

To highlight just how fighting fit its cabin crew are, Hong Kong Airlines has released a new advert, recently posted on YouTube, in which an air stewardess uses her free-flowing kung fu moves to point out the destinations that the carrier serves.

The advert, which claims the airline is ‘reaching higher’, ends with the boast that all the cabin crew are trained in wing chun.

Lakeland self defense – Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy

Wing Chun Kung Fu and Lakeland Self Defense

lakeland self defenseIf you are looking to increase your level of physical fitness and learn a martial arts discipline that is well respected within the martial arts community, one of your best options for lakeland self defense is Sifu Och’s Wing Chun Kung Fu (Downtown Lakeland Martial Arts).  This type of training offers the participant a vast number of benefits from a physical and mental standpoint. People tend to forget how important it is to learn proper lakeland self defense.  So many believe that you can just do some cardio kickboxing or a local gym workout called “combat bootcamp” and be able to truly stop a violent assailant.

Lakeland self defense at the Wing Chun Kung Fu Acadmey offers you the opportunity to train underneath experienced professionals and harness your ability to apply and learn to use lakeland self defense techniques and tactics. People who have participated in programs such as this continue to see an increase in her level of confidence by understanding that they now have insights into how to properly defend himself regardless of the situation.

In  Florida, I’d recommend Sifu Och’s academy of Wing Chun lakeland self defense has been training individuals to learn the skills and techniques necessary to protect themselves regardless of the situation.

A martial arts program is an extremely popular option for families who are looking to increase their childrens level of engagement, focus, discipline and athleticism. Lakeland After school martial arts programs are perfect for developing the students flexibility, strength, speed, and even overall stamina. But I’d like to mention that following a discipline such as wing chun kung fu you will see your child  learn the power of mental focus and discipline.  Wing Chun kung fu will also continually working there body and mind developing and achieving greater strength and muscle tone with a working and focused mind.

Often times people believe that the only benefit of a martial arts program is that they are just another way for to get some cardiovascular exercise. This could not be further from the truth. Students will typically not only see weight loss and increased muscular stamina.

They will be learning a discipline that has been passed down for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. Bringing the culture and tradition of old into the modern day era.  As they train through these techniques, they will typically see an increase in their speed and understanding of the core concepts that represent the discipline of wing chun kung fu.

The mental benefit of being able to focus on your martial arts class will help you forget about the stresses of your day and give you an opportunity to release any anxiety or frustration.

It is no secret that physical exercise and afterschool martial arts programs have been overwhelmingly successful in allowing students to learn discipline and stay active. Too many children these days do not get enough physical activity. Couple this with a poor diet and lack of discipline and you have a big problem on your hands.  Getting them involved in wing chun kung fu and the lakeland afterschool martial arts program will be one of the best ways to keep them engaged and off the couch.

“If your goal is to focus better, develop lakeland self defense skills, get out of the gym or just do something new and different then Wing Chun is a fantastic option for that and more!”

Martial arts training, techniques and programs such as the ones available from wing chun kung fu will offer you a complete solution to physical, mental, and emotional health. I love stand up and striking so let’s look at Krav Maga Wing Chun schools of martial art self defence it really depends on how hardcore you get and where you are training. Also as always it depends on the instructor, I have seen some pretty hardcore Wing Chun and Krav Maga schools, but I have also seen some very laid back Krav Maga and Wing Chun schools as well.

Anyway, back to the devastation which is Krav Maga Wing Chun.  Don’t let the word Kung Fu fool you, Wing Chun is a brutal style of close quarter combat.  They get in quick, they trap your arms and stike you in the throat/ribs/or/face at the same time, they kick out your legs and are not one trick ponies.  The whole art is based on brutally punching, kicking and beating your opponent into a smashed paste, but so is Krav Maga.  Krav Maga has pulled aspects of Wing Chun into its art because it respects this style so much, so much love. Wing Chun teaches mostly close quarter in-fighting punching and striking techniques, though there are some seriously dangerous moves even at a distance.   Wing Chun has very destructive and powerful low kicks to the knees, groin and ribs which don’t take alot of stretching or flexibility to use.  Wing Chun also punches, elbows and chops at the eyes, throat, ribs, neck, joints, arm breaks, knee breaks, headbutts and loves to trap and attack simultaneously.  If you are lucky enough to find a Wing Chun school that teaches ground self defence, knife and gun tactics you will be privy to a amazing arsenal.  It can be taught to women, men and children that are looking to quickly stop larger and stronger attackers in a quick manner.

Krav Maga is more of a militaristic martial art in that it focuses alot on combat encounters such as a AK-47 or other Military gun being pointed in your face.  Krav Maga also teaches kicks, grappling, knife, gun and other types of military scenarios. Wing Chun schools such as Sifu Och’s Wing Chun school in Lakeland, Florida, Wong Shun Leung Ving Tsun schools in Europe such as Philipp Bayer’s are great street self defence schools.  These guys teach these knock out street fighting Wing Chun aspects as well but from real serious scenarios such as home invasion, parking lot, and bar scenarios. Though Krav Maga also teaches a lot of scenario techniques as well such as chokes, bear hugs, knife attacks, and shirt grabs.  The same type of scenarios are in both Wing Chun and Krav Maga and they both want you to just react, react, react or laugh out loud… attack, attack, attack!  The best offence is a amazing defence right, Wing Chun and Krav Maga have both! Both of these street fighting and self defence styles teach how to knock out or kill in the advanced levels.  Both Kra v Maga and Wing Chun were developed for war and real street self defence.

Krav Maga or Wing Chun?  I personally would recommend Wing Chun unless you live in a area of the world that has been torn asunder by war or terrorist.  Not to mention that Wing Chun has aspects that suit every age and size, drills and applications that can keep you advancing into your 80’s and 90’s. Wing Chun’s fast rooted and structured attacks will increase your self defence while in a family environment. I would also say that in my opinion Wing Chun is better for day to day street self defence in most countries as they focus on the close quarters of practical fighting.  I personally in all my years have never been approached in a street fight by guys carrying automatic weapons and bullet proof vests.  If I did, I get out of there first before I said hmm time for my Krav Maga or Wing Chun training.

Just make sure you find a Wing Chun instructor that is really focused on knock out combinations, real street self defence versus the forms and intense theory/slapping hands/and lots and lots of history.  Make sure where ever you are you let your instructor know your goals, tell them you want real street self defence and fighting combinations.  Let them know you want to push yourself towards a higher level of street self defence protection.  If they know and they teach it, you will love it! Both Krav Maga Wing Chun are amazing street realistic self defence combat martial arts, I just hate fighting Wing Chun guys, I guess that’s why I joined them.

an unbaised opinion from a guy that loves to fight –

If your wondering why I left out MMA (mixed martial arts) cage training and JKD (jeet kune do). I left out MMA (mixed martial arts) cage training as there are many rules and the street has none, though it is very effective I would have to say most schools do not cover knife, gun, stick or reality situations that may be encountered on the street.  Such as you get a guy to the ground and he pulls out a knife or hey, lets just say he is standing and trying to cut you… when did your MMA (mixed martial art) coach go over that for the ring?  I am leaving out Jeet Kune Do as I love the practice and idea but finding someone that actually has a root in Wing Chun teaching it is getting near impossible. Wing Chun was hailed by Bruce Lee as the huge fighting engine for JKD (jeet kune do).  To hear some JKD instructors actually say Wing Chun doesn’t need to be learned as part of the system is like saying pressure and close contact shouldn’t be part of Jiujitsu .  It’s hard to admit but most of the JKD (jeet kune do) instructors I have seen now only have a understand of boxing, muay thai, some jiujitsu and some takedowns, which is unfortunate.  If a JKD (jeet kune do) school is missing a big handle on using and understanding the Wing Chun fighting aspect then I would have to say its more MMA than Bruce Lee JKD. With much love and no disrepect I stick with my choices of Krav Maga Wing Chun as truly devastating stand up striking street self defence martial arts.

Women self defense – Is Wing Chun only for Women?

Women self defense – Is Wing Chun only for Women?

Women self defense?
1) I have heard that Wing Chun was made by a woman and thus is only good for women and children, is this true?

2) If so why do I see the majority of its Grandmasters and Master’s as Men?

3) Lastly I see that Hong Kong Airline Attendants are learning the close range combat Wing Chun, and that the Wing Chun Style came from Grandmaster Ip Man (man) and has been passed down to men and women.  How does Wing Chun use power, and close range in a self defense situation that differs from other styles?

10 Reasons refuse training at Sifu Och Wing Chun Kung Fu

10 Reasons refuse training at Sifu Och Wing Chun Kung Fu

There are the following 10 reasons refuse training at Sifu Och Chun Kung Fu

1. 10 Reasons refuse training at Sifu Och Wing Chun Kung FuNo Trial, No Money!  They actually make you do a trial of the wing chun, martial arts, the bootcamp camp classes before they will take your money.  Just having money in hand or a credit card doesn’t get you enrolled here.  You have to show the instructors, students and school that you really have a willingness and ability to train and want results.  Who wants to know what they are going to get into before they put money down?

2. They expect you to be an adult and not whine! Excuses, complaints, and people who aren’t disciplined enough to see and strive towards success are driven from this school like a plaque.  They don’t except a person crying or having bad attitudes while training, all that is left outside the door.  Do you really want to be in a place where the person next to you is driven and happy to see you there?

3. They Train too hard!  You will lose weight, sweat and have to really apply yourself.  The classes move fast and before you know it you will be done.  If you just do the motions they will get with you one on one and help you. They don’t want slackers, they actually want people who push themselves and want results. Who wants someone to care enough to want you to progress?

4. The training is too honest!  If you are not doing a technique correctly they let you know and what you to get it down so you can use it. They don’t give you a belt because you paid for it, they make you work and show that what you are doing has ability behind it. They hold you accountable for your own success.  Who wants a school that doesn’t just give belts away and makes you work for what you earn?

5. They Assist and Instruct you!  They won’t just let you punch or kick a bag and feel good about yourself for learning nothing.  They want you developing great self defense skills and improving your physical and mental health at the same time.  You will have to put the effort in to get stronger, faster and better with each class.  Who wants to have to put in hard work and time to gain a useable skill that makes you stronger and healthier?

6. No trophies, No Fancy movements!  There are no trophies, awards, flowery or fancy movements, they don’t teach you to run across the room and jump in the air or do big movements that have no purpose.  They actually make you learn defense against real life street scenario’s and tactics to get out of some really bad situations.   They teach you honest reality self defense against resistance.  Who wants to train at a martial art school that makes you prove something works before you get on the street to see if it could?

7. They teach modern and traditional martial arts!  They expose you to the culture and stress relieving techniques that have been practiced and proven for thousands of years.  They give you an outlet for you to finally do something for yourself.  They teach you a reality based self defense system that they expect you to master because it could save your life or someone you love one day.  Who wants someone teaching you that wants the safety and health of you and those you love uplifted and better protected?

8. Always something new!  They have come up with a system where no two days or workouts are alike. Sure they have a great curriculum that progressively assists you to constantly achieve. They also teach and re-teach you the skills you need to gain a real understanding.  But there workouts are time based so any one can do them and have fun.  Who wants to work on body weight training, muscle confusion and time so everyone, even those with past injuries can gain great and fast results while never getting bored?

9. They expect training, hardwork, results and progress. They actually want you to push yourself in each class. Wait, they actually want you coming to classes and maintaining what you have achieved and overcome obstacles holding you back.  They expect you to be part of the school and come and train.  They want you to achieve more than what you may have thought possible within yourself.  Who wants the kind of stress that comes with constantly growing, improving and actually having to come to class?

10. Too much money.  They charge you just enough to actually pay the bills and make you feel like you should show up and train.  They honestly think that if they have expert instruction and teachers, a fully equipped training facility and instructors who have trained in close quarter combat and self defense willing and ready to teach you in a positive environment that this would be a value to its members.  Who wants to pay for a professional self defense studio with well versed experts and encouraging people ready to get you results?

Why people may tell you Wing Chun Sucks….

Why people say not to train in Wing Chun and the weaknesses of Wing Chun or Wing Chun Sucks …

Misleading reports, fake instructors with only bits and pieces of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun), difficulty finding a real wing chun instructor and martial artist attempting to teach youtube wing chun kung fu within their schools without any real training and teachers telling students they don’t need to spar or use techniques against resistance to “truly understand and learn wing chun”.

But once you visit a good Wing Chun School you can not deny the direct effectiveness of the style.  I have seen people online blogging and telling prospective students and readers that Wing Chun Sucks (Ving Tsun sucks) without even knowing the system.  Anonymous individuals write in blogs and article spots online claiming expertise, possibly real or false martial art backgrounds and experiences and expressing to you what you should and shouldn’t do with your life and self defense goals. Because as a society individuals love to feed, perpetuate and spread what negative rumors and things they have heard or read instead of checking on the facts for themselves.

By listening to blogs or the opinions of friends you will never discover what you want, instead go and try out the school and see if the techniques really make sense in a high stress enviroment aginst a large aggressive attacker.  If not you may soon find yourself at a belt factory, quickly working your way up the chain gaining belts but not skills, ability and real life self protection.  Every school is different, I have students that have spent 30-50+ years in the martial arts, 7th Dan in Shotokan Karate, 6th, 5th, 3rd dans in Taekwondo, Judo, blackbelts and ex-marines, rangers and practitioners in mma (mixed martial arts) and Krav Maga.  I have heard them all talk about how what they trained in wasn’t anywhere close to as effective as what they have seen in our Wing Chun Kung Fu School.  Does that mean that Wing Chun is better than these arts, no.  What it means is that where ever they trained their instructor restricted them, or did not teach them, push them or maybe even understand how to apply the techniques in a real fashion. Or maybe they were commercialized and didn’t want to lose students by making things to difficult which many commercialized schools know happens if you push and train your students to hard.  To find a really good martial art school you have to go through many bad, poor and mediocre ones in order to find a great one!  Even then, It is not the style that fights it is the practitioner, the more dedication, time and hard practice you place in the more you will recieve.  But placing your time and dedication into a poor or mediocre school will have you wasting time and money.  Seek out a great martial art school to maximize your results and self defense protection.

But many don’t do this, they read a article and blog written by other practitioners of other styles of marials arts expressly telling you that you should train in anything, I mean anything but Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) don’t do it, do a commercialized martial art school that is really close to you and doesn’t require much effort. Do any another style, but don’t go down and even look at it yourself, don’t make up your own mind… instead follow negative hearsay and the opinions of someone you don’t even know

Ridiculous!  Make up your OWN MIND, your ability is based off of your instructor, their experience, the training and your dedication!

I have seen extremely effective martial artists from every style and I have also seen horrible instructors from the same styles teaching with tons of students.  In fact I have seen  more martial art instructors that couldn’t teach a student to fight out of a wet paper bag and have hundreds of students then great instructors teaching real techniques with a small amount of students.  The same martial art style school 20-40 minutes away with a smaller following because they actually teach, push and really instructing their students to learn and know how to use the material on the street against resistance.

I have caught people and instructors from other arts telling others not to train in wing chun because it was made by a woman.  I laugh because if a martial art was made to teach a 110lb woman to drop a 220lb man, then what could a 170lb+ male do with the art?  Really?  Blogs and new age martial artists will tell you that honor, respect and dedication are just an old practices from a dogmatic age.  Look I agree some schools can become cult like, telling you to never questioning techniques, work in dogmatic motions that are rigid and unreactive, and have students telling you what the instructor can do but can not do anything like it themselves after 15 years.  But how is Honor, respect, integrity and dedication to one’s own and family goals, dogmatic and see as old practice.  If dedication, perserverance and honor are old practice then sign me and my students up because without that we are chaos.

Make up your own mind by trying out the martial art school and making your own opinion.

My issue with blogs not the exchange of opinion by the punishment, ridicule and shunning for expressing a different opinion or even looking up and making up your own mind on the martial art.  You can’t even tell people on these online chats/blogs that you come from a background in military combat training, mma, karate, tae kwon do, silat, boxing, jiujitsu, etc. and that you find Wing Chun to be extremely effective street self defense training. You will be verbally attacked even though you have the experience and expertise to make a informed decision and speak about it.  Our school has a 7th Dan Shotokan Karate practitioner that has trained in Okinawa, Japan, 6th, 5th and 3rd Dan Taekwondo practitioners, black belts in a huge variety of martial arts, ex-marines and rangers, police officers and bouncers that have said Wing Chun is by far their choice for extreme situations and the safety/self defense for those they are trying to protect.  Yet anonymous individuals on blogs will say you must be stupid or have been the worst practitioner in your previous styles because Wing Chun can’t be good for you.  It was made by a woman for God’s sake, how could it possibly be good for a man?? If you are a man, you want a man’s art not something with a power struggle, a exchange of punches and kicks back and forth until one of you just eventually succom to the blows and chokes delivered.

Experts and life time practitioners that have actually been in street fights and used their fields of expertise are telling you that Wing Chun under a seasoned instructor is one of the best choices you can make for stand up fighting.

Lets look at Wing Chun’s practitioners to prove our point. Bruce Lee’s most influential martial art and his only formal training in the martial arts came from years of dedication under the modern founder of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) Ip Man. Bruce Lee is known in the Mixed Martial Art world as a visionary and the 1st leader in MMA cross training.  In case you didn’t know and I am speaking from our lineage only, Wing Chun encourages every instructor and practitioner to seek out, study and understand the techniques, attacks & holds of other martial arts.  This is so that a Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner can become better using Wing Chun and fighting with it intelligently in a street fight.  In our school we believe that if you have never seen a technique or practiced against it then you may be suprised by it.  The great part is that Wing Chun attracts people who have never trained to great martial arts and masters that have achieved lifetimes in their previous styles of self defense.

If you don’t know what another martial art is going to do, then you may get caught off guard.

Look at the 1st UFC cage fight with Royce Gracie, his arm bars from the guard and choke holds surprised everyone, when asked how he won he said it was because no one had fought his type of jiujitsu before.  Now go into any variety of martial art schools today and you will see people training on arm bars and how to get out of them, even children are now trained in these jiujitsu techniques.  This is not to say that they are not powerful, in fact they are extremely effective but martial artists saw something effective, quick and fast and wanted to understand it and hopefully not get caught by it in the future if ever faced against it.  Thus since their inception these types of techniques no longer surprise people and their are about a 1000 sites you can visit and even more youtube videos then you may ever be able to watch showing you how to execute, stop and reverse these moves. Education and adaptation is key to becoming a great martial artist and the reason why so many black belts and ex-military are at our school is because WIng Chun trains this everyday.  Training and educating a practitioner to never be surprised by various styles and techniques but rather just react offensively is the way of Wing Chun. Education in the martial arts is essential in training and understanding the power of Wing Chun.

Bruce Lee has countless videos of him training and pushing his abilities in Wing Chun known as a primary engine of JKD

Bruce Lee had countless fights and challenges for teaching Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) to the “round eye” (that’s you and me unless you are absolutely 100% pure chinese, 99% doesn’t count- your still considered a heathen in those times and unworthy of Wing Chun, “no secret kung fu for you!”) Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) is what Bruce Lee used to fight and defend his title, his life, and his family. It is what made him a great practitioner in Life and in Hollywood. Actors came from everywhere to train with him, heavy weight boxers couldn’t touch him even at the age of 16 years old (according to James Demile an original student of Bruce Lee’s and a heavy weight boxer). “By the way James Demile is awesome, a very down to earth guy and if you ever get a chance to meet him he is the kind of guy you could have a beer with and then beat up the guys in the parking lot trying to mug you, always with a smile.” Bruce Lee developed Jeet Kune Do “JKD” with the core engine of JKD being Wing Chun Kung Fu (Ving Tsun).

Its funny that I have heard some people state that Bruce Lee despised the art of Wing Chun.  Yet I have seen more countless video’s showing him training in Chi Sau, Wooden Dummy, Wrist -vs- Wrist fighting, Chain Punching, Reaction Drills, and of course the “one inch punch”.  All of these drills and techniques are completely and wholeheartedly claimed and owned by Wing Chun (no add-ins, mixed components or mixed styles, these are all pure Wing Chun Training). The Intercepting Fist is directly taught and trained constantly as the core of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun Fighting Power). Wing Chun uses the its intercepting fists throughout the art as a effective redirecting tool.  Yet look… JKD is described as the way of the intercepting fist.  A direct Wing Chun link, maybe even a tribute to Ip Man his first and honored teacher or Wong Shun Leung and Wing Chun (Ving Tsun).  Bruce Lee never finished the art of Wing Chun but you can see constant reminders of his love for the style, because no one constantly practices a style they despise nor do they video tape themselves to see how well they are doing and where they could improve.

Bruce Lee’s ONLY formal instructors were Wong Shun Leung and Ip Man, both Wing Chun Masters

Bruce Lee supposedly did a challenge fight with Wong Shun Leung after his creation of Jeet Kune Do at the pinnacle of his fighting career. Supposedly, “the king of the talking hands”, Wong Shun Leung, a pure stylist of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) fought Bruce Lee and this is why Bruce Lee asked him to finish him out in the Wing Chun system.  I have heard instructors and places online tell that they had a even match and others say that Bruce Lee was so impressed by the full fighting use of Wong Shun Leungs Wing Chun he asked him to be his second and only formal teacher besides Ip Man.  Though there is no proof of what happened during the fight only hearsay, what we do know is Bruce Lee had a great respect for his senior in the art of Wing Chun, we do know that Wong Shun Leung was Bruce Lee’s second teacher and that both loved Wing Chun deeply.  Wong Shun Leung had known Bruce Lee since he was a young man and had trained side by side with him under Ip Man the Great Grandmaster and Founder of Modern Wing Chun (Ving Tsun).  Making the only formal teachers in Bruce Lee’s entire life Ip Man and Wong Shun Leung both of them life long Wing Chun Kung Fu Instructors.  What was it about Wing Chun that made Bruce Lee train it as a child, develop Jeet Kune Do and then come back as a Adult and want the rest.  Why are the only formal teachers Bruce Lee wanted were always from the Wing Chun Kung Fu style.  Bruce Lee sought out the best and travelled because he knew the benefits he would gain by not taking the easy route.  Bruce Lee saw what you may see today if you find the right Wing Chun instructor.

Wong Shun Leung is a legend in the martial arts world as a top fighter and visionary with over +100 wins in no rules, no gear, no holds-bar fights, and no loses using Wing Chun (Ving Tsun). Wong Shun Leung is a combat artist, seeking the deeper understandings and applications of the martial arts and how to use them. When the Art of Wing Chun Kung Fu (Ving Tsun) was finally revealed to the mass population, it was ridiculed by other martial artists for being a “Woman’s Art”. Wong Shun Leung gladly backed the legitimacy of the style of Wing Chun (VIng Tsun) through challenge fights. Wong Shun Leung was renowned for winning all of these challenge fights using Wing Chun (Ving Tsun). He proved to anyone from any style that this “Woman’s Art” was extremely powerful and effective. He took challenges from Professional Boxers, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and European Martial Artist. Anyone from anywhere who wanted to fight Wong Shun Leung soon found themselves at the end of his fists. Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) was created and passed down from a extremely high ranking Southern Shaolin Sil Lum Temple Master & Buddist Nun -Ng Miu. The art was created to make a weaker man or woman capable of beating and destroying an attacker of larger size and strength in the most horrible and life threatening situations possible. This art was created and refined through 5000 years of Chinese war, shaolin combat techniques, and modernized in a day in age with guns, cannons, swords and knives. This is not to say Wong Shun Leung was invincible, he was hit, kicked, punched and elbowed in these fights but because of his heart and his training in Wing Chun he came out the victor, knocking down or out his opponent’s.  As Wong Shun Leung took these challenges he was never beaten, a man seeking the heart of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun). A man with a passion and respect for the art and its ability to protect the innocent and weak using Wing Chun.

Wing Chun is possibly one of the most widely known gung fu arts in the world.

Its centerline theory radiates from many kung fu chinese styles used in war and personal protection and has been attempted to be incorporated in many other styles (Krav Maga anyone? Anyone who says otherwise has never looked at the two, check the blocking and attacking, check the double jum sau’s used in Krav Maga -vs- Wing Chun (Ving Tsun). They are the same, except Wing Chun is 350 years old!

Why would I tell you not to practice Wing Chun?

If not willing to seek out a real practitioner or instructor that constantly strives to know, understand, and execute the complete style of Wing Chun Kung Fu in a combative manner. Instead you may seek out a instructor that is close or easy and that has taken Wing Chun Kung Fu techniques off of DVD’s, Youtube or poor previous training in bits and pieces and misrepresented it in their schools and media outlets. Many of these “instructors” have seen few moves on youtube or in a DVD and then teach them to you on the floor as “trained full fitted and certified representatives in the art of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun)”. These fake instructors give authentic Wing Chun Practitioners a bad name. Once you have done REAL Wing Chun, you can spot them instantly, but if you have no background in the style then you may never know (that is why I love youtube). Look up practitioners and you will see if they know or don’t know, spar with them, see if they practice and train with the class. There are so many ways to tell if you are at the right place or not (LOOK for a REAL WING CHUN INSTRUCTOR).

Wing Chun has even received misleading reports that it doesn’t have any types of snapping uppercuts, elbows, knees, head butt’s, chops, short inside hooks, footwork, angles, kicks, power, reality resistance drills, or endurance training. My first thought to these reports… MAN, what does my art do besides chain punch and sit around doing forms all day.  Which I feel is odd since there are only three forms in the entire system because the system is based on doing 90% reactionary drills/techniques/combinations/ and survival practice with a resisting fighting opponent.

The Best Wing Chun practitioners, finished the system and sparred constantly.

Lo0k at the best practitioners in Wing Chun, the ones closest to Ip Man, the modern founder of Wing Chun. You will find these practitioners fighting/sparring against other styles, practicing against resisting opponents, and constantly pushing their bodies, minds and Wing Chun survival techniques by training in every aspect of the Whole art, not just a piece or two. Individuals, blogs and articles have said that since Wing Chun was finished out by or created by a woman that it is no good for men and has no power. Which in Wing Chun circles is a topic of laughter, because if you can teach a short Chinese woman at 90 lbs 4′ 7″ to stop a male aggressor twice her size and weight, apparently knowing that kind of martial skill wouldn’t be just the kind of power a 190 lb 5′ 10″ man would want to get his hands on?

Your gender does effect the quantity of your muscles but not the quality. Muscle tissues are characteristically the same in both men and women, though because testosterone increases muscle size men usually have much more muscle tissue than women do. Men are generally stronger in their upper body because they usually have larger muscles and thus more power. Though woman may have less muscle mass they have the same types of muscle fibers. Thus if a woman created Wing Chun to fight a man, how would a man fair with the same art? How effective could he become in Wing Chun having more strength and power combined with the fast reflexes and reaction of a Woman’s system of fighting?? Remember the people and martial artists on these blogs, articles and sites don’t want you to train in Wing Chun. Misleading people, discrediting the art online, and harassing you if you mention anything about Wing Chun being effective is there best weapon in stopping you from studying Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) or even seeking out a good instructor that can teach you. Their hope is to weed out and stop the future development of this effective style of fighting. Without new and dedicated students training under instructors that are VERY GOOD in the martial arts these instructors can’t pass on their skills. With No new Master’s or Instructors you kill the skill and art as a whole. If a high ranking martial artist doesn’t pass on their skills and abilities then the art, skill and ability goes with them.

Seek out the best to become the best.

Ever argue with a woman? Now try fighting one that was bound and determined to destroy and devastate everything about you. How far would she go, what wouldn’t she do, how far would she push herself? What would she want to know and be able to do to complete the task without much effort or risk to herself? Second, because if it was good enough for a woman to shut down a man with half his muscle fibers then it is definitely good enough for a man to use to protect himself and his loved ones. Not if, but when a woman would have to fight a man, she would have to be able to hold her own, not just in body conditioning but also in power. Thus a woman would also have to work to redirect and use softness and hardness in a fight to get out of the way. Since she would know that softness alone is not going to finish an attacker, she would have to train harder and know tactics that could over come his brutal strength and prior training. That is why Wing Chun redirects and attacks at the same time. That is why we work on speed and angles of attack, why we condition on heavy bags, sand bags, focus mitts, training pads, gear and spar in drills, sticking hands, sensitivity fighting and free fighting to increase power, awareness, reaction and combat relative ability. Remember that if you are training in a “woman’s martial art” then it is probably going to push you hard and have tactics that might be useful against other “male” martial arts. Have you ever tried to get a hold of a feral cat? Yea that’s what I thought. Depending on the history you rely on, Ip Man; the modern founder of Wing Chun Kung Fu, told us that the creator Ng Mui (woman Buddhist nun) passed it onto Yim Wing Chun (the daughter of a bean curd salesman) just in case Ng Mui got caught by the Manchurian Dynasty. Who would have ever thought to look for the daughter of a bean curd salesman?

Once this info was passed down from Ng Mui to Yim Wing Chun, it was then passed down to her husband Leung Bok Chau who then passed it onto a succession of men who have continued passing the art. From its creation as one of the first martial arts to be finished and created by a woman and passed down to another woman, it has been men that have continued to hold the torch waiting for women to grab hold and run with it once again, or at least side by side as equals if they will have us once they get their art back. Think of the speed you have seen in Wing Chun then place a knife in its hand. Would you call that weak? Or would you want the speed, the trapping, the ability to feel, strike and understand this kind of power. Think of its practitioners of Wing Chun, have they been known for weaknesses; Ip Man, Wong Shun Leung, a man undefeated in over a 100 no rules bouts against men twice his size. The legendary Bruce Lee was taught by Ip Man and Wong Shun Leung, and Simon Lau (who was named #1 European Human Weapon using the art of Wing Chun) Yip Ching and Yip Chun (the two sons of the Founder Ip Man), G.Master Steve Lee Swift (a man of remarkable speed, knowledge and power), the list goes on. My name is Sifu Justin Och. I teach the next generation of Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioners at the Downtown Lakeland, Florida Martial Arts and Kung Fu Center. I seek to make every woman, man, teen and child that comes in my door the best they can possibly be, the best survival practitioners, the best martial artists, the best in Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) that I can make. So here it is, if a woman helped create a martial art to shut down and destroy the arts of men, then why wouldn’t a man, given the opportunity, learn such a well thought out plot. A woman bound on freedom, liberation for her people, empowering the weak and making them strong, bound and determined to destroy and devastate everything about you should desire to train in Wing Chun. How far would she go, what wouldn’t she do? This is Wing Chun (Ving Tsun).

I hope this article was helpful, it is my opinion and thus is not perfect but I believe in a style saved the lives of my students, protected them from rape and hospitalization.  I believe in a style I have had to personally use on the street as well as in and out of the kwoon (dojo / school) and overseas.  I personally believe in a style backed by Bruce Lee, Ip Man, and Wong Shun Leung as a street martial art.  I also beleive we should come together as martial artists to make each other stronger in friendship and in self protection of our loved ones no matter what style of martial art you lead your life with.   Oh and the picture to this article is two of my Wing Chun Students.

Natural help for adhd / add through martial arts instruction

These days you don’t have to look far to find children suffering  from ADD, ADHD, and other sensory and mood disorders.  Some have been  carefully and expertly diagnosed.  A large contingency of people feel  that these diagnoses are handed out much too generously and without  proper evaluation, however.  A child can’t sit still in his or her  seat, and they are promptly labeled.  Parent’s are frustrated with  speedy judgments and rightly so.  But being desperate for help and  worrying that their child’s social life is soon to be suffering,  some tentatively resort to medication.

According to Medline Plus, a service of the National Library of  Medicine, ADHD is more common in boys than girls, is hereditary, and  symptoms must be present for at least six months for a true diagnosis  to be considered.  They also urge parents to get professional advice  rather than making self diagnoses.

The most common symptoms of ADHD are hyperactivity, inattention or  short attention span, impulsivity, short temper, and organizational  challenges.  ADD is much the same, minus the hyperactivity.   Interestingly, these characteristics are present only when children  are disinterested in the topic that they are being required to give  attention to.  According to helpguide.org “It isn’t that children  with ADD/ADHD can’t pay attention: When they’re doing things they  enjoy or hearing about topics in which they’re interested, they  have no trouble focusing and staying on task. But when the task is  repetitive or boring, they quickly tune out.”

As a teacher, it is especially challenging trying to make every lesson sufficiently interesting and varied so as to keep all children engaged at all times.  Even when I do my best,  it’s often still not enough to prevent some “tuning out”.   Children these days seem to lack the discipline it takes to stay in  tune with their surroundings.  Perhaps this is due to limited  practice in doing so?

When I say discipline, I’m referring to the following definition:   “training to act in accordance with rules;  drill: military discipline”. It can also refer to “activity,  exercise, or a regimen that develops or improves a skill; training.

My personal belief (which is shared by a majority of my colleagues)  is that overstimulation with media plays a big part in this “absence  of discipline” for several reasons.  Media is everywhere and easily  accessible.  Hand held games can be played while riding in the car.   Kids text constantly, even while in class (says my son who shall not  be named).  The internet can be accessed by phone.  What better way  to keep kids quiet and entertained?   It’s an “instant oatmeal  world” as my husband calls it. How can we teachers compare to that?   We’re not animated, we don’t have sound effects, and  unfortunately for our students they can’t “turn us off” when  they’re tired of us.  Whatever happened to good old fresh air and  sunshine?  Climbing trees?  Doing things as a family?

Over-use of technology is attributed to another growing concern when  it comes to children: obesity.  Statistics say that cases of  childhood obesity are becoming more and more prevalent.  Not only do  extremely overweight children have to endure humiliation, taunting  and teasing from peers, they are at increased risk for a myriad of  health issues.  Type II diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood  pressure, and sleep apnea sound like conditions only an adult would  have to suffer.  However the occurrence of these health problems is  increasing at an alarming rate.  In addition, these children are at  higher risk of developing, liver diseases, orthopedic problems and  asthma.  Many continue to struggle with their weight even into  adulthood.

No matter where you look for support,  all sources will recommend some basic guidelines.  Eat healthy meals  in appropriate proportions, have healthy snack choices available,  limit “screen time”, and exercise daily. If you  suspect that your child might be carrying too much weight you can go  online to any BMI calculator website, plug in your child’s  information, and see how he or she measures up.   BMI stands for Body  Mass Index, is calculated using a person’s weight and height, and  is a fairly reliable indicator of body fatness for most people.

Whether your child has a professionally evaluated case of condition  “X” or simply has an overabundance of energy, why not consider an  exercise program that is beneficial for children in general,  ESPECIALLY those with specific needs, and for the whole family as a  unit?  Not as a cure, but as an aid to developing discipline, keeping  weight in check, and increasing self-esteem

One obvious choice is martial arts.  Of course while participating in  any group activity the technology would have to be put aside for 30  to 60 minutes.  But tell your kids it will be well worth the  sacrifice.  They’ll get all of the above benefits, and all the  while have IMMENSE fun!  Not all martial arts programs are the same,  however.  So how do you go about finding the right one?  My advice as  a mother of three and teacher of many is to actually go to a martial  arts center; ask a lot of questions, watch an actual class.  See what  fits you/your family best.

There are several in Lakeland,  including one that I’m personally very fond of; Master Wing Chun  Martial Arts on downtown Pine Street. What I like about  this particular facility is their mission statement.  Owner Justin  Och boasts that his program offers Martial Arts with a purpose; practical skills rather than flamboyant moves are  taught.  He has been employed previously by other martial arts  centers that teach “fancy moves”, kicks, and punches. This  experience is what prompted him to open his own place.  Adults and  children alike will learn self defense moves.  Adults will be taught  to protect themselves from other adults; children against potential  kidnappers and the “choke holds” other kids might put on them  (which Mr. Och says is becoming quite common).  After people have had  training in handling a sword or knife they’ll know how to use it,  not just twirl it around for show.

I actually came across Master Wing Chun  when seeking out guidance from an herbologist (Justin Och) for some  health issues. I personally have not taken a class yet, but am  anxious to do so after my daughter and I witnessed a class! We were  so excited about signing up that we went home and told the rest of  the family about it.  Now, they want to try it as well.

Several classes are offered at Master  Wing Chun Martial Arts, including Kung Fu, Kickboxing, Self  Defense, Boot Camp and more.  Everyone is welcome whether you are an  adult, child, beginner or if you have experience in martial arts.   Seven to ten instructors are present during any given class, so  personal attention is available at all times.  Check out their  website for pictures, videos, and details on classes.

Sifu (meaning “master” or  “teacher”- pronounced “see – fu”) Och is personable and  friendly, yet at the same time he is quite intense, and passionate  about sharing his knowledge.  Not only is he a master at martial  arts, he is a trained iridologist and herbologist, and can assist you  with health and weight loss issues.  After one conversation you’ll  realize that he offers a wealth of knowledge.  If you happen to stop  by while a class is taking place, be prepared to be impressed!   Students are friendly, focused, and without a doubt thrilled to be  there.

Children reap the benefits  and create healthy habits that will follow them throughout their  lives:

RESPECT: Children learn to bow  to the masters who came before them, and to their current  instructors. They also learn to treat other students as they wish to  be treated.

According to parenting.com many  parents whose children have ADHD state that their kids have had great  success with these types of programs because self-control and  concentration are the precise skills that need development.  But,  say experts, it’s the respect kids learn that can be the most  important benefit: It often carries over into school, helping to  improve behavior and even grades, according to recent research.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T….As a teacher, that’s  GREAT news for me!  It’s Great news all the way around, actually.   Imagine less negative feedback and more positive feedback from your  child’s teacher.  Imagine your child showing you and others more  respect.  Imagine your child bringing home better grades due to his  increased ability to focus, and the self-pride that goes hand in hand  with an impressive report card!

FITNESS: The movements of the  martial art itself often challenge your muscles and cardiovascular  system. Martial artists are known for being toned, flexible and  physically fit.

SELF DEFENSE: The ability to  defend yourself against an assailant is an empowering feeling. Master  Wing Chun Martial Arts uses self defense as a cornerstone of the  entire program.

SELF DISCIPLINE: Martial  arts help instill mental focus in your child, giving her the ability  to concentrate on a task and see it through to its conclusion.

SELF  CONFIDENCE: A child who is  involved in martial arts is generally a child who is confident in  herself. Martial Arts helps a child develop measurable goals to  follow that are realistic to attain. The sense of accomplishment a  child feels by mastering a new technique follows him everywhere he  goes.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

Take the time to stop by and chat with  Sifu Och.  If you don’t, you’ll be missing out on an opportunity  of a lifetime.  As he puts it, “There’s only so much time in a  day.  How are you going to invest it?”  He issues a warning,  however:

ATTENDING  WING CHUN MAY GET YOU IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE, MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON INSIDE AND OUT. YOU WILL AFFECT OTHERS IN POSITIVE WAY WHILE LEARNING A LIFE SKILL THAT MAY ONE DAY SAVE YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONES  LIFE.

Florida Wing Chun Schools / Florida Ving Tsun Schools and training methods

Why is Our School of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) Lakeland Martial Arts Different? This article is provided by Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) Martial Arts & Kung Fu  in Downtown, Lakeland “Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) Martial Arts and Kung Fu” is run by Justin Och an Advanced Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) Kung Fu practitioner with over 20+ years experience in the martial arts.  Awarded by the USA Black Belt Hall of Fame “Inspirational Leader in Combative Wing Chun” and “Wing Chun Kung Fu Instructor of the Year”. Our Lakeland Martial Art School is located in Polk County at 116 east pine street, Lakeland Florida

Every Martial Art School is different, find out more…

Every Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) school is different, look on youtube and you will see what I mean. I will speak about our school and our training methods for reference, this doesn’t mean your Ving Tsun school is wrong and we are right, or visa versa it only means that our lineage has  a different teaching method and just like every teacher is unique, each instructor in the martial arts  finds what is best for them and there students. When reading the articles on our site I want you to look at what is said and shown with a logical mind, a scientific mind and if after reading what is shown and said makes sense to you take it in, if not look at it deeper and subjectively and see what makes sense for you and your training . The way I train others is not far off from how I was originally trained, but the time and dedication that most students need to put in to get at the real heart of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) or martial arts in general is not usually there on day one. Intense dedication over a proven period of time equals success and mastery, this as we know it is Kung Fu. How often do we hear people speak of there sons and daughters at the age of six or eight becoming black belts and how there children know and are equal to those adults of a similar rank and status running schools here and overseas. This is not intense dedication but rather a false sense of self and self-possibility, no matter what your age is, when you get your black belt you are still mastering the art. Depending on your age, the time you placed in the art, your intense dedication and the skill of your trainer will all determine your self-possibility or rather the possibility of self skill within and without. A trainer/instructor/master can only bring you to the pinocle of there ability, there limitations are your limitations but the limitations they place in the classroom will also limit your self-ability and skill through future training and practice. Literally you are only as good as your Master or as good as your Master is willing to teach you too. Teaching ability is your ability to be taught relies on you and your Master, if you are unwilling to listen and think logically through the techniques presented to you and absorb them you may be very difficult to teach. On the other hand you may find a Master that can show you he/she has great skill and ability in there art but his five and ten year students don’t emulate this skill or ability. These instructors fall under a few categories, some are unwilling to part with the knowledge that took them half there life time to achieve or find and so they either don’t teach the full capabilities of there art or they teach it slowly.

Others are more than willing to teach these abilities but there students but no matter how dedicated they may seem when they walk in the door, do not have the drive, time or will power in the beginning to do what is necessary to attain the true heart of the art they want to study. When these types of instructors try to push there students and intensify the training and build martial warriors there students complain about sore limbs and tough workouts and not having as much fun. This is a business decision, teach your students over time and then after three to five years we can try to give them

When students come into there first class they have the potential for greatness, every student does, but will they quit if its too tough? Will they quit if the martial art takes time to learn?  Will they give themselves the time they need to succeed? Many people ask how long till I’m a Black Belt/Master in your Martial Art? My answer is, do you have any prior experience, how many days a week are you going (not just willing to train), how intense will you train when your here (do you just show up or do you push yourself)? Remember we get a “Master’s Degree” in 2-3 years when we have already  graduated elementary school, high school, recieved an associates and bachelors degree. Education of the mind and body takes time, fortunately Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) does not take as long as many other martial arts to get to the higher levels.

Over the years I have come to understand that the most people give up on themselves before they truly see their real potential. We take Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) and placed it into different stages allowing students to digest each piece as part of the greater whole. By allowing them them to see what higher level students are doing it drives at the heart of lower level practitioners to continue to push for the full understanding of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) and what it means to have the complete art unchanged and how effective that truly can be for those students.

Full Body Self Defense Lakeland Fl

Full Body Self Defense is developed for protection and peace

Using your entire as a weapon; my grandmaster in Tai Chi (Grandmaster Lee Chen Style Tai Chi from the Chen Village in China) told me that this is called five bows, each arm and limb is a single bow and the torso is the fifth and when used as one entity of solid body mechanics and proper technique they become stronger than anything your opponent can throw. Now again here is a theory, can we prove it? The answer is yes, as the chapters go on you are going to notice the more you learn how to use the entire body as a whole the stronger you will become. Though I’m sure you may have heard of using your entire body as a weapon, but how often do you see it done or taught, how often do you see a flow of combative hits in practical sparring that use every part of the body to attack and ever part that attacks is backed by the rest of the body in on flowing solid connection. Unfortunately we hear about the principles but very few people know how to use there entire body as one and even fewer know how to teach it. As Authentic combat Wing Chun practitioner’s we are constantly trying to make ourselves and our art within ourselves stronger. Not out of some need to harm others but because it brings us closer to our true selves. We know how invigorating it is to use your full body self defense lakeland fl.  Training within Chi Sau (fighting with double sticking hands) or Wrist against Wrist with another higher level practitioner. We also know that we can always get better so we are always students to ourselves and those around us who may be able to shed light on something deeper we have not yet touched on. We are also reclusive with our techniques at times seeing them as precious pieces of gold only to be shown and traded with those we feel will honor our lineage forefathers and the lives and blood they shed to understand and raise up. Though once you are seen as a honorable and respectful man/woman you are treated as this art has always treated someone of that caliber, like family. Our hearts and doors open to you with the knowledge we have gained and what has been shared with us as well. We want you to understand and be able to use the techniques we share to there fullest because by doing so you give honor back to those lineage forefathers that taught it to us and to honor them we seek to make you great. When you show humbleness and respect to those who have made you, you are also respected in return. That is why we strive not to create new fancy moves and theories or new beautiful looking techniques. We know that knowledge without proven application is just a theory and the principle of Wing Chun theory is the creation of an idea that comes from reality and combat.

Training and using “Applicable Theory”

There are times when you started reacting to a combative situation only to flow with a series of techniques and one pops out that was not something you had planned on by came out because Wing Chun demanded it in that moment, that is applicable theory. Your intense perseverance and dedication in Wing Chun demanded that application drive out from the very soul of your skills and abilities at the peak of your reaction. This “Applicable Theory” was automatically proven because it had to be, it wasn’t thought about for weeks and talked about it was used in seconds. “Applicable Theory” allows for one the expansions of Wing Chun to grow as times change, it allows a practitioner to develop themselves for a variety of situations. At Wing Chun self defense lakeland fl we combine relation of body mechanics and proven related combative action in a realistic situation where all proven theory takes a front seat to the ideology of theoretical possibilities. In the nature and purity of Wing Chun techniques and its original purpose on effective point to point center line relation with complete and simultaneous protection and devastation, ideology is proven or forever dismissed by a seasoned practitioner against a uncooperative assailant. Though “Applicable Theory” is not the only way Wing Chun grows from within its own purity, Wing Chun always makes the practitioner ask the “what if” question. If you have ever been in a martial art, seen a situation or have been presented with a theory of how a technique would or could work, you may have asked yourself, well “what if” the person did this. In this book alone you may ask “what if” though nothing is perfect and this is not designed to answer all of your questions because that is the nature of Wing Chun it is the “what if” martial art and we will always keep asking. Though it is very hard to find a Wing Chun practitioner that knows the complete system of Wing Chun they are out there waiting for the right student, waiting for the “what if”. Because Wing Chun loves to answer the “what if” when you find a high ranking SIFU that has trained in the complete art of Wing Chun ask them “what if” and you will see a smile on there face, because here comes the answers and they are logical, extremely effective and useful. But only with time, dedication, training and sparring can you make them your own, until then they are not yours and will not work for you until you make them yours. This is the beauty in Complete Wing Chun and the benefit for time spent, it is the “what if” martial art, it takes your questions and places them through 10,000 years of logical fighting techniques and body mechanics and gives you the one of the best answers you could have hoped for.

sparring, mobility, speed, power and controlled direct contact

This is the foundation of Kung Fu, the Heart of Wing Chun Kung Fu, whether you are reading this for yourself or for your school we know that if the majority of our training is Yin and instill Yin we will get a Yin student. Have that student face a situation on the street or against another practitioner that has been training for sparring, direct contact, mobility, speed and power, all of the things that Wing Chun represents and who do you think is going to win? Think of the greats in Wing Chun Kung Fu, Yip Man (Ip Man), Bruce Lee, Wong Shun Leung, Simon Lau, etc. They were all fighters, they spoke and trained for fighting with Wing Chun (ving tsun) Many years ago before I started my Wing Chun training, I had trained in other styles and was trained to believe that I could Master the martial arts without sparring. When I first started Wing Chun I quickly changed my mind, where did these practitioners get all of their speed, endurance, technique and power, how could they react to everything I did and was thinking about doing before I even got to do it? I realized that direct confrontation with a moving, active, thinking opponent was completely different then my mirror and forms provided. I realized that this was where Wing Chun (ving tsun) Kung Fu reigned and if I wanted this elusive martial art as my own I was going to have to push myself in dedication and win or lose I would be the one gaining all the benefits and true understanding of those secrets deep within Wing Chun. This is where I started looking into the different techniques, combinations and movements that were being given to me. Over the years I looked deeper into the body mechanics of Wing Chun and how slight adjustments for my body size and those around me could increase not only my power but the effectiveness of ever technique I executed.

solid body mechanics and proper technique, a lifetime of understanding

Techniques that I thought I could never use in a combat application became more than possible as my strength, understanding and ability increased. Wing Chun truly is a complete system it emulates its name “everlasting spring time” or “ever changing spring time” it has an answer for any situation, it is a progressive and modern martial art. Its #1 rule is “your closest weapon to your opponent’s closes vital” that means that whatever is the most direct attack do it. Don’t think about it just attack the next closest vital, keep your root strong, your footwork correct and allow your whole body to become a weapon.

Sensible Self defense Lakeland FL – PART 2 NO non-sense

Wing Chun Martial Arts – article part 2

sensible self defense Lakeland fl

(Part 1 Here) If you are looking for a realistic system for sensible self defense Lakeland fl that doesn’t focus on tournaments or point sparring but instead is looking to increase your speed and defensive skills this is the martial arts training for you.

No Gi Chinese Jiu Jitsu and sensible self defense lakeland fl

Alongside of Wing Chun Kung Fu a primarly standup martial art system of sensible self defense Lakeland FL, Sifu Och’s center also teaches No Gi Chinese Jiu Jitsu (meaning with or without shirt jiu jitsu ground training). It is both a combat sport and martial art that teaches a effective sensible self defense lakeland system through ground fighting. Its primary technique is to trap, choke or pin down a bigger enemy by leverage and technique, rather than strength. No Gi Jiu Jitsu was carved out out of the 10,000 years of war in China and has seen an expansion in today’s martial art realm.  Many amazing practitioners in the martial arts have studied and continue to study jiujitsu. People can get sensible self defense lakeland FL by joining the wing chun kung fu academy. Realistic sensible self defense Lakeland FL. from Chinese Jiu Jitsu ground fighting, Japanese Jiu Jitsu to Brazilian Jiujitsu, there are a variety of types of ground fighting techniques from various continents and regions from all over the world that are taught today. Japanese Jiu Jitsu, was supposedly derived from Kodokan Judo, a Japanese martial arts that has it’s original roots in China like many Asian martial arts.  These arts were traded on the silk road and then took a form of their own when they were developed in the cultures and history of the new founding owners region.

Some say that No Gi Jiu Jitsu started in America through Cesar Gracie, Chris Brennan, and Eddie Bravo. Chris Brennan discovered, while training with some Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players that his skills almost matched their’s when he took his Gi off*.  After doing this for a while, he concluded that No Gi training is great for developing muscle memory instincts.  Even though Sifu Och does not teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu he has multiple friends who are highly respected black belts in this amazing and highly respected fighting martial art.  Sifu Och was taught No Gi Chinese Jiu Jitsu from Master Instructor Dr. Nelson Rios who has trained all over the world.   With a background as a Ranger for the U.S. Military, Boxing, Muay Thai from professional trainers in Thailand, MMA camps all over the U.S. Master Dr. Nelson also trained in Jiu Jitsu Training with Rob Khan and Royce Gracie and Wing Chun Kung Fu training from Grandmaster’s and Masters all over the World. Including but not limited to Moy Yat’s lineage, Ip Ching and Ip Chun directly (two son’s of the founder), Simon Lau and the Wong Shun Leung Lineage.

(*Gi  = a traditional uniform worn by Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Japanese and Korean martial artists).

No Gi Jiu Jitsu is not only proven as a good form of self-defense, but as a complete body work. It increases stamina and improves body tone.  If this fits the criteria you are looking for then No Gi Jiu Jitsu is the martial arts for you.

Boxing

Boxing can be considered as one of the most popular professional sports in the world. It is a multi-million dollar sporting event in itself. It has therefore increased its fame as a self-defense sport. Boxing is a combination of offence and defense and can be integrated in various other systems such as Muay Thai, American Full-Contact, and Mixed Martial Arts.

As a sensible self defense lakeland fl technique, you have to learn to hit an opponent through a jab or punch in critical body points such as the eye, the nose, chin or forehead.  It is best to use open hand strikes in a real-fight situation. You have to be trained to execute punches straight to the body which includes performing uppercuts to the groin, bladder, solar plexus and kidneys as well as hooks to the side of the neck.

The Wing Chun Martial Art sensible self defense Lakeland FL. believes in educating the practitioner in all forms of fighting.  Within the Sifu Och Wing Chun center it is trained that “to better understand what another martial art might do against you is the best way to improve and train your Wing Chun fighting skills, for how often will you fight a Wing Chun practitioner versus how often might you fight a MMA (mixed martial arts), Taekwondo, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Hapkido, Boxer, Aikido or other type of martial artist?”  So many people come into our school, some with no experience and some with a lifetime of training and knowledge.  Sensible self defense lakeland, wing chun kung fu is the most important martial arts school in lakeland, florida. Why should we not understand and spar against an individual that has trained in another style?  The more we do so the better we become and the more capable we are of better understanding ourselves within Wing Chun and its constant want and need to improve our lives both in and out of the school.

Boxing is a amazing martial art that also attacks the centerline, incorporates quick footwork and movement with fast attacks.  To fight and spar against a well trained boxer is to fight and improve yourself in every aspect of your stand up application within Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Boxing should be used as a combination to other self-defense techniques and should be an enhancement to any base self-defense program. It can be used for fitness or a great form of self defense and training enhancement.

Tampa bay bouncer uses Wing Chun street fights in Ybor City bar

so tonight.. I got use wing chun for the first time at my job where I bounce on saturday nights at a bar. 3 big dudes got into it.. in the process of trying to split up the two initial dudes, I had to use a serious of paks, bongs, jums, and punches to the inside of a biceps to redirect punches from hitting one of the dudes in the brawl, then as I got one guy down on the ground, another guy jumped in to try to stomp the guy on the ground with his buddy, I had to throw elbows into stomachs with a shove to keep those two guys back from the guy on the ground. Real street fights are either violent and aggressiveWing Chun street fights now is bashed by many as a crappy and ineffective kung fu martial art. In the martial arts, one school of thought holds that you should change your game to match your opponent’s. Tampa bay bouncer also uses Wing Chun street fights. while trying to block the blows being thrown from the guy on the ground… then the cops came outta nowhere as we rounded up the herd of drunk brawlers and kicked them out. Wing chun street fights is a street-ready style because the system focuses on close-range combat.  Surprisingly I managed to get out of that altercation with a red mark on my forehead from a headbutt from the initial scuffle.

Never have I felt so confident in my training as I was tonight..  (gotta love that muscle memory) I am grateful to our Sifu and school for all the hard training. Words can’t even explain. P.s. Sifu-WING CHUN!

Beginner Martial Arts & Introductory Wing Chun (Ving Tsun)

Beginner Martial Arts Introduction to Lakeland Martial Arts & Wing Chun Kung Fu (Ving Tsun)

Beginner martial arts, we teach Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) Kung Fu Martial Arts in Downtown Lakeland Florida to provide people with a realistic alternative to family safety and protection. I want to pass the information and knowledge of the Ip Man’s martial art known as Wing Chun Kung Fu to those good hearted individuals seeking peace and security in their homes and lives. It is my hope that the information contained within this will assist you in becoming stronger, faster and more equip in a dangerous situation. I am not a Guru, I am not your Instructor, I am a instructor that is be a practitioner in the complete and the very effective art of Wing Chun Kung Fu as it has been passed down by the (Yip Man) Ip Man lineage. There are a lot of beginner martial arts programs. My Master was directly taught in China, Europe and England by Master Simon Lau, Master Yip Ching and Master Yip Chun and briefly with the highly respected and honored Master Wong Shun Leung. I have followed in his footsteps traveling overseas seeking out practitioners that trained directly with the highest levels of Wing Chun (ving tsun). Only through proper training can one achieve the next level.

Beginner Martial Arts

Wing Chun is a scientifically based martial art

When I speak about techniques, drills, body mechanics or fighting combinations they come from several life times of information and proven applications that have come from my teachers teachers and those high practitioners who have given me the honor of learning from them. As a Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner I believe that like Wong Shun Leung and Simon Lau techniques must be proven with talking hands. I believe that unless you can use the techniques on a live struggling decisive opponent, that it is only theory and theories can not help you in a life threatening situation. We have seen too many techniques in the martial arts world are based off of theory, a fancy move that looks great but when applied against a live resisting opponent it just doesn’t work. Theories are great but unless they are proven and applied then they remain in that realm; a theory. Wing Chun is a scientifically based martial art system using body mechanics, torque, redirection and rapid subtle power to stop a much large foreign aggressor. Yet this again is theory, unless you know how to use Wing Chun in a stress induced situation. Wing Chun is a extremely effective art but too few practice and train in it for fighting. We have many individuals and schools that train for years on Sil Lum Tao (1st form), Chum Kiu (2nd form), Bil Jee (3rd form) and Chi Sau for the first 6 or 7 years without any combinations, attacker response to your actions (counters), resistance, stress induced reflex applications, or even moderate sparring. This type of training is good if you are only seeking the internal Yin style of Wing Chun much like that of Tai Chi. But there should be no argument that a person needs to be prepared for the adrenaline dump, stress, anxiety, fear and quick movements, reactions and footwork of actual combat. Fortunately there are many ways to train and spar in Wing Chun Kung Fu and all of them can lead to an extremely great practitioner in the art. In our school we start practitioners -aka- new students her in lakeland florida with drills and quick techniques that can be used on day one against a resisting opponent. These techniques use quick reactions to your opponents aggressive nature, such as blocking and attacking simultaneously. Blocking and attacking simultaneously sounds like something any school could talk about incorporating, but Wing Chun Kung Fu is a complete system that teaches this in every aspect, not just one or two techniques. Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) uses redirecting footwork such as shifting to throw an opponent off balance and exploit weaknesses with quick reaction. Learning how to place the right hip movement into each attack without throwing the shoulder out or losing balance within a rooted foundation. Beginners also start learning how to control there own balance, so that each attack has no indication before it strikes but rather hits and is then felt. New students at our Lakeland Florida Martial Art Kung Fu & Street Jiujitsu school test there martial art ability by using these skills by blocking and attacking from a multitude of angles. Students must demonstrate that they can get out of the way of blows while using there Bui Sau’s (high block with a simultaneous punch), Gan Sau’s (low block with a simultaneous punch) and Tan Sau’s (mid-block with a simultaneous punch) so that every movement comes as a reflex to every incoming blow. This is trained with safety and precaution to turn a student who has never trained in the martial art system of Wing Chun (ving tsun) into a reality based family protecting practitioner. By teaching people from day one how to use there blocking and attacking simultaneously as a reflex you are giving them a foundation on which ever technique should fall into this category and if it doesn’t we will work on getting it there. The first couple of months of a new Wing Chun practitioner’s time will stay with them for the rest of there lives, they will reference back to that throughout there lives. So this time is very important in the growth and mindset of a student. What traits would you want to instill? Hardwork, time, dedication, becoming quick, powerful, reasonable, determined, direct, not wasting time, getting to the heart of the issue, perseverance in the face of impossible odds, pushing past your own limitations and the limits others try to place on you?

Knowledge, Not Mysticism And The Martial Arts

It’s knowledge, not mysticism and the martial arts. This article is on the nature of martial arts as seen through Sifu Justin Och’s eyes and experience. This article give knowledge about the martial arts and the real generating force behind it; dedication to the goals we set forth in life. While we do that let us also speak about Sifu Och’s school of Wing Chun Kung Fu and the Martial Arts here in Lakeland, Florida. Well understood and true knowledge about proper diet, training, techniques and the persistence on building both the body and mind to new heights are always the goal. If you are interested in martial arts, you should have knowledge about it like its diet, techniques etc. Sifu Justin Och believes a educated student that can think and react for themselves is the best student. You should have knowledge about the principle elements of kung fu. Not a drone and not a mindless clone; for the martial arts to get better and for Wing Chun to grow we must educate our students to the best of their abilities and limits, may there dedication be ours. Knowledge of science is also useful for a kung fu men.  Sifu Justin Och’s Wing Chun doesn’t play on the mystical or magical sides of Kung Fu mysticism in the martial arts. You should test your kung fu knowledge on time to time. Sifu Justin Och believes that the only thing that is mystical about the martial arts is the dedication and persistence it takes to gain a real hold and understanding to become a Master Practitioner.

This is an informative article that applies directly to Sifu Justin Och’s Wing Chun, there are many who prey on the mysticism of the martial arts, the words and the history without any show or training to the degree of there knowledge and tales of what could be. You are seeking a sense of truth and you need to learn what it is you seek and you will find it in the Fountain of Knowledge. In this article, there are many important things which give knowledge about kung fu martial arts. Training and the Martial Arts is not about how much history you can speak of or how many people you weave into its winding philosophies, its about keeping the ones you love safe and improving the lives that each training session touches. We hope you enjoy our thoughts on the martial arts and how we perceive its benefits. (this article can not be copied or used on any other site)

We have seen so many movies, shows and programs profess and feed off the “mystical almost supernatural” portions of kung fu and Asian/Chinese marital arts. You should have kung fu knowledge for your safety purpose. We have seen people declare that they can tip toe on tree’s, hit people and knock them out from a distance purely with there chi and thought. People, including myself who have been brought up on these “super notions” are actually quite disappointed when you tell them its not true, much like the first time you found out about Santa. The reality though is much sweeter, with the right instruction, technique, body mechanics and pure diligence you will become stronger and faster then you may have dreamed.

Teaching the real aspects of Wing Chun Martial Arts

We recently put on a Wing Chun seminar and demonstration for the USA International Eastern Black Belt Hall of Fame. In this article, there is the knowledge of real aspects of wing chun martial arts. The reaction was two fold the first was “In less than an hour you debunked so many myths about Wing Chun as just a fast art with no power, control or purpose, I never knew.” and the other reaction was “where do you train and will you come to our school to do a seminar, I would love to learn”. This testimonials are from Master’s and Grandmaster’s highly respected, highly educated in the martial arts, with a huge respect from a style that teaches the true and real aspects that can be attained by anyone with the proper instructor, school and dedication.

Not all schools are the same, just like not all Wing Chun Kung Fu schools are the same. Wing chun kung fu lakeland have the full knowledge of various martial arts. Any art can get a bad name from those who tout they know everything. You can also get knowledge abut the martial arts by joining the wing chun martial arts in lakeland. No one knows everything, everyone, everyday is growing. A tree is much like a person, once it stops growing it starts dieing. So many school owners and students claim to be Master’s and yet the actual time they have placed into a specific marital art before opening a school and collecting your money may be scarce. Second to that, a quote from a large martial art school owner and instructor out of Orlando; the masses don’t want real martial arts training and hard work, they want to feel good, get instant gratification, a pat on the back and be told they are doing real martial arts. Train them hard or teach them the real thing and they quit.” This same instructor then told me; you are like Sam Seltzer’s Steak House your school turns out top notch martial art and fitness instructors and practitioners, but how many people eat and seek out steak, they want McDonald’s. Now think about that, here is a great instructor, I know he is good but he has had to change his whole perspective to keep the doors open. As a client you make or break the schools in your area, if you didn’t want this type of training don’t pay for it, and eventually they will get better or they will go out of business.

Our Martial Art School is Not a belt factory.

I can give you a prime example, and you see what you feel after the scenario is done. A few months back I was to put on a quick Wing Chun martial art demonstration in downtown lakeland florida. After gathering the crowd around us, with many parents, kids and families I began to discuss Wing Chun and the difference between it and the many other schools of martial arts available today. Our martial arts school is not a belt factory here you can get full knowledge of martial arts. Our martial arts school is specializing in relaying their skills and knowledge in a well- structured and easy to learn manner. Everyone gathered in closer to hear and see what I was talking about, there were so many people that most asked me politely to speak up because they couldn’t hear in the back. People starting asking questions and getting more involved and excited about what we were talking about. I then explained that we do not give away belts every month and that they have to be earned, and that it is the skill achieved and not your belt color that was important. On that note over half of the people walked away, 50%!! Taking there children, husbands, girlfriends and family away because they would get a satin cloth every two months. I then starting show the speed and accuracy of Wing Chun, no fancy movements or kicks, just techniques and quick power that makes it so effective, fast and useful to any size or aged child, woman or adult. I explained anyone could attain this with hard work and dedication. I was now left standing around with about 8 people left, and out of those was one Kung Fu practitioner of another school, which I will speak about in a second. We all want the real stuff, we all want protection but you decide where you put your money and your time. Martial arts can reduce your stress and increase and improve your life and make you a happier healthier person. Our martial arts school give the full knowledge to improve your physical health. Kung fu also give the knowledge of positive mental maintenance to a men. Choosing the right school and the right teacher, not just the one that is the closest to you may be the hardest choice. Your time is invaluable and can never be replaced or returned. You can make the choice now or later, you can chose what will be best or convenient, but time well spent priceless.

I recently had two amazingly respectful and courtesy new students join from a local martial art school here in lakeland, the school is huge and it even has a waiting list so they must have a great business model and have the money and opportunity to teach there students. These two were 13 year veteran black belts, who taught almost all of the martial art classes, did the demo teams, sparred and did all of the weapon training. These students during thanksgiving met up with one of there old friends; a student of ours with only eight months of training in our Wing Chun system, with no previous martial arts training or experience. When they found out he did Wing Chun they decided to spar and found out that there kicks and punches got shut down immediately. They spoke of this student of 8 months with high regard as they had heard of Wing Chun but had never seen it in action. They came in soon after and asked if they could join, they said they thought they were being shown self defense but found out there teacher had not decided to train them properly so he could keep them coming. After asking them how they were trained from day to day, month to month they discussed it with reluctance. I find that many people see the effectiveness of Wing Chun Kung Fu, but martial artists with previous training or experience have a deep love and respect for it.

No experience needed to train in martial arts

This isn’t to say that you need experience to do Wing Chun, in fact I have seen very effective practitioners come out of both sides of this coin. I have a Grandmaster Dr. Don McNatt who trained as a Marine in Okinawa Japan and has been training in the Shotokan Karate System for 60 years and he started over to train in Wing Chun Kung Fu and has been loving every moment of it. If you have no knowledge of martial arts, then no need to worry. Wing chun martial arts in for you.  Does that mean his Shotokan Karate wasn’t effective? No by no means, he is a warrior of 80 years old and his punches and kicks would put “Kung Pow” holes in your body, but he saw how effective Kung Fu and specifically Wing Chun can be and he wanted that knowledge and skill. I have had students with no experience train and protect themselves against knives and horrible situations within a matter of months and years.

Building a focused mind and a relentless work ethic in everything you wish to accomplish. Wing Chun will teach you the importance of proper nutrition and well balanced exercise to maintain proper weightloss or body conditioning. If you want to gain knowledge abut kung fu, you should join kung fu school in lakeland. I highly recommend everyone pursue the martial arts, its benefits are there for the taking, you just need the right instructor looking out for the best within you. They may be hard on you some days and fun with you the next, a good instructor is not perfect but seeks the perfection of what they see within you.

The Positive Mental and Physical Improvements

Few other activities in life provide you with so many positive benefits in both your mental and physical health. Wing Chun is a scientific based martial art system with decades of culture, self defense, and proven combative success. Though martial arts in general involve fighting techniques, physical exercise and discipline, mental focus and mind and body philosophical & conceptual toughening. Wing Chun is the study of kung fu, culture and the art of the mind in its relation to the body the hard and soft, internal and external process by which we express ourselves. Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do’s own Bruce Lee may have said it best “Artless art” is the artistic process within the artist; its meaning is “art of the soul.” All the various moves of all the tools means a step on the absolute aesthetic world of the soul.. Art is the way to the absolute and to the essence of human life”“Creation in art is the psychic unfolding of the personality, which is rooted in the nothing. Its effect is deenening of the personal dimension of the soul.”

From standing meditation to breathing techniques, Wing Chun Martial Arts will greatly influence you and your life in extremely positive ways. So many books have come out declaring the use of marital arts strategy and the way of the warrior mindset in the office, boardroom, negotiations and personal and corporate buisness, used by high ranking CEO’s, Presidents and top performers. In a society that has so much information and technology flowing at there fingers tips we are finally starting to realize all the wonderful benefits the martial arts really has to offer us in every aspect of our lives.

bone hardening and muscle conditioningKung Fu practitioners and great Chinese martial artists throughout the centuries have trained and practiced to gain the ability to withstand powerful blows and generate superior strength in all of their attacks. Kung fu is the best way to do your bone hardening and muscle conditioning. There are various way of bone hardening in martial arts. But kung fu is the best for bone hardening.  In advise to bone hardening and muscle conditioning, you can use kung fu martial arts. Kung Fu practitioners is a great way of bone hardening and muscle conditioning in lakeland. (this article can not be copied or used on any other site)

Many people call bone hardening and muscle conditioning by many different names, Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate calls it Tui-te. Some martial art stylists use maki wara boards (a board with hemp rope tied round it) you continually hit it and build up callouses on your knuckles, similar to hardening the skin on the heels of your foot and your hands. For doing your bone hardening and muscle conditioning, martial arts is only for you. Even without bone hardening and muscle conditioning Wing Chun provides techniques such as eye gouges, palm strikes, elbows, strikes and kicks to the knee, groin and ribs, wing chun provides a assortment of very effective and efficient techniques to assist you and your family in a dangerous situation on the street. Bone hardening is possible only with kung fu martial arts. Kung fu is proper way of bone hardening and muscle conditioning. Remember that body and bone hardening, muscle conditioning is not a replacement for realistic training and combat experience. Many people wants to do their bone hardening. This is supplemental training to add to your endurance, speed and current power that are all tools behind your skill and reflexes in a bad situation.

Body conditioning and Building Serious endurance

Overall body conditioning and building serious endurance is an extremely effective training method, it develops all aspects of a warrior and chinese martial art practitioner. We know that the human body was created to repair and rebuild any area that has been stressed or suffer injuries. Before attempting any kind of bone hardening, muscle conditioning or body hardening, first I recommend you train under a professional. Even though bone hardening and muscle conditioning is not new to the field of science any more or martial arts, not just everyone knows the proper and safest way of conditioning your body. You can do your bone hardening with kung fu martial arts. As I said first you need a martial art practitioner to train and teach you, training on your own without the proper instruction can be dangerous, you may not be conditioning at all but rather just killing your nerve endings. This brings me to the point, just because you killed your nerves and did possible permanent nerve damage by striking an object a thousand times doesn’t mean your shins are now steel, it just means you can’t feel anything. A professional will also be able to bring you to heights you may have never been able to bring yourself.

Sifu Justin Och holds certifications from the Regan University, Spelendid Health International USA Holistic Association which was founded by Dr. Nelson Rios who trained under Bernard Jenson in Advanced Herbologist, Iridologist and Certifications as a Nutritional Health Coach. With proper supplements, diet, nutrition and sleep you can build a formidable body that supports not only the bones, joints and tendons but also the heart and vital organs during a confrontation. Proper sleep and nutrition helps the whole body not just the singled out area your working on. Kung fu martial arts also used for bone hardening and muscle conditioning. The human body is amazing and fascinating, it can heal itself and actually breaks down and rebuilds tissues and tendons from strenuous workouts in order to make the body stronger and resilient. In the 19th century German Anatomist/Surgeon Julius Wolff developed a theory that stated that healthy bone will adapt to the loads it is placed under and if that load increases, the bone will remodel itself over time to become stronger to resist that sort of loading or training. For centuries Kung Fu practitioners and martial artists have known how to strengthen, harden and increase the strength of muscles and bones. Only recently has modern science started to understand, prove and investigate this well know practice. Bone hardening sounds like a scary word, it doesn’t sound like something you would want to do willingly.  In bone hardening and muscle conditioning, you can still learn enough of the basic principles to safety condition. The truth is that taking care and increasing the hardness and density of your bones is not only smart for marital arts but could be a good safe guard against future falls or trama in the later years of your life. By eating properly, taking in the right supplements and doing proper and safe training you can really get some great results! Did you know that it has been shown that even doing Kung Fu forms such as Tai Chi or Wing Chun in slow motion can increase muscle density. Bone hardening is the finalized result of healing after you have created micro-fractures in your bones that can result from everything from hitting, striking, conditioning or even running. Whether you are training bone hardening on purpose for Muay Thai training, Wing Chun, Kickboxing or MMA Mixed Martial Arts, you will need time inbetween training and bone repair from the micro-fractures in order for it to harden. You can train on a Muay Thai bag every other day starting slow at first with your kicks and then gradually increasing the intensity and amount as you train. Remember not to overdo it in the beginning as you don’t want to break your legs or cause damage in the ankle or knee. You must listen to your body, if it says stop, then stop, if it say rest then rest, if it say get me a sandwich call someone quickly because your hallucinating and you might pass out.

Nerve damage, permanent damage and tips

Many practitioner’s use some of the old traditional ways of bone conditioning and bone hardening not remembering that these methods were made for people who live to a ripe old age of 30-35 years old. That means these methods did not consider a person living to the age of 80, 90 or 100+ years old, and so by using some of these methods you deaden nerves, do permanent damage, and could suffer agonizing pain, horrible arthritic conditions in the bones or joints or even partial disability. Wing Chun uses muscle and bond conditioning and hardening methods but they are gradual and safe, they may not get you results as fast but in life there are no short cuts that don’t come at a cost. You can still have the power and the results, while still being able to train them safely until the rip old “new age” of 110. There are students all over the world that are 80 and 90+ years old still practicing Wing Chun Kung Fu daily. This is the power of a life time of trained skill and power. Damaging your knee’s, neck, shoulders, wrists, back and ankles will only come back to haunt you years later.

Now on to the tips…

  1. Striking your legs and arms with sticks, first start off slow then you can upgrade to hard wood or rattan sticks
  2. Using a rolling pin, bamboo stick, or bottle of glass over your shin up and down continuously
  3. Striking and Hitting a Muay Thai type bag, other bags can be used by I truly feel that the Muay Thai practitioners had it right, this is the best bag for shin and fist conditioning
  4. Striking focus pads and shields is good for beginners as well as intermediate training
  5. Along with focus pads, sand and rice bags are a great tool, they are usually mounted on walls wrapped in canvas and provide a great training tool.
  6. Wing Chun specifically uses the wooden dummy to condition the forearms, fists, shins, legs, feet and elbows. This type of conditioning can build arms that feel as strong as steel, other styles of kung fu and martial arts have purchased wooden dummies or even modified them, but many have no idea how to truly use them to increase there speed, power, structure, timing, technique and strengthen there bones, muscles and tissues. Under proper instruction from a Wing Chun master practitioner you can gain a lot from this Shaolin temple device. It is a centuries old tool made of hardwood with specific angles and uses, knowing your wooden dummy and how to use it properly can take you to whole new levels.
  7. Wing Chun also uses centuries old kung fu drills and techniques to build the arms and legs, drills that start of slow by lightly striking forearm to forearm using both the inside and outisde of the forearm to build both tendons, resistance to pain and the understanding of combat infliction on the body and its tools for combat.
  8. Make sure to massage the area and surrounding area that is being conditioned during and after training, hot Epsom salt bath’s will help to relax the body and increase blood flow and faster healing into the area.
  9. A good tiger balm (in a jar) or a good aged (1-3 year) Dit Da Jow is always a good investment, making your own is an even better investment. (if I get enough people that want the recipe I’ll post a good one on this site.
  10. All else fails and you can’t get a good tiger balm or good aged Dit Da Jow, my Grandmaster in Tai Chi from the Chen Village of Chen Style Tai Chi told me in secret once that a high quality, high grain vodka does the trick and I have found this to be true as well.
  11. Heat pad, that’s right the trusty old heat pad, place that sucker on the area of effect and feel the blood, nutrients, red and white blood cells do there job, a heat pad indicates to the body that you need help repairing this area, chinese medicine tells that we should avoid cold at all costs, think of it like this, your leg has been damaged from training much like a car accident on the high way, which is the best way to clean up the accident? Swelling which makes room for blood and nutrients to repair the area or an Ice Storm that freezes the accident, its victims, and the area’s of effect from those that could help. Use heat in moderation and it can help speed up your healing.
  12. Do not forget to stretch and do this this post work out regiment, if you are determined then the only thing that can truly hold you back is how fast you heal up so you can get back to your training.

Proper training vs Quick bone hardening and conditioning

I have heard of many ways to condition the body, the bones and muscle/tendons, I have heard of skin conditioning where trainers use focus mitts or open hand palms to slap various parts of the body, such as the arms, midsection and legs. I have heard of people kicking shin to shin, striking the various parts of the body with there legs and arms until they are “conditioned” to take the pain. I have heard of practitioners of the martial arts actually striking each other as hard as they can in the midsection, thighs, shins, arms and even the head to build up so called “conditioning”. I do not know the legitimacy of this type of training, I do know that I have spoken to students of this type of training and many of them have had organs rearranged in a non-beneficial sense. They have spoken to me of lasting effects that have had them hospitalized at the most and watched by there primary doctor for other side effects and pain at the least. There is legend and mysticism wrapped up in the Master’s of old, there power and there abilities, but proper training is not mysticism. This is not mysticism or legend but can still be quite dangerous, as a practitioner of the martial arts and as a natural medicine practitioner, herbologist, iridologist and nutritional specialist I highly discourage this type of training. Strikes to the chest, stomach, head or organs to “toughen” them can have dire effects. Though It may seem great at first as results may seem at hand, but the damage you may do to internal organs being struck, shins and knees being battered, strikes to the head and the shock to the joints can lead to severe issues and problems later on in life. I try to make as many friends as I can in the martial arts, young and old, everyone has something to teach you. I have known so many martial art practitioner’s that have gone through this “type” of training, even under a professionals eyes which saddens me. They saw results for a time and then at the later years in life have had severe issues, join problems, pains, numbness throughout whole sections of there body. It is almost too much to think what these warriors of there time were able to accomplish and as they aged they suffer under the training that they once cherished. Train and condition the right way, train and condition yourself slow and safe, you have time don’t rush it, for fast results come at a cost.

Power and Unflinching determination for anyone

I had a semi-professional boxer who fought in the ring all the time come into my gym and was curious about the wall bags (canvas bags filled with sand) and kung fu, he saw the Wing Chun students striking the bags viciously with chain punches, turning punches, elbows, and palms. As a boxer he said that must be pretty easy and it looks like it could be a lot of fun, I’d like to give it a shot, after only 3 punches in he pulled back with pain in his knuckles, hands and wrist. He couldn’t understand why a small woman could hit it with rapid power and unflinching determination. Everyone and anyone at any stage of there training can gain both power and strength from further training. Even a professional can gain skill, hardening and knowledge, we all can.

Many years later that same boxer contacted me up to let me know that the training and footwork he was provided had improved his ring fighting so notably that after bouts the other fighter was asking what he was doing and what he was training in. He said he felt very fortunate to have trained in Wing Chun and that his Kung Fu training had touched his life both professionally and personally. Even though his passion and work took him away from our school our teachings followed him, this is the purpose of Wing Chun, of Kung Fu, to improve the whole of your life.

(this article can not be copied or used on any other site)
Martial Arts stress reliefMartial arts stress relief, the aim of the martial arts has always been and continues to be the development, welfare and improvement of the practitioner. There are some martial arts today that dismiss these ideas as out dated and dogmatic, I then ask you; do you feel that your mental development, improvement and welfare is outdated? Do you feel as though the martial arts should only teach, uplift and educate you on just a physical level? Wing Chun was developed to be a martial art of extreme speed, power, control, battlefield intellect and one of the fastest to learn Shaolin Kung Fu systems of its time. It was meant for the physical protection and development of the practitioner, but it is also know as a mental chess game where the mind and body cease and only reaction exists. This being said stress, anxiety, frustration, anger, and emotion need direction, focus, martial arts stress relief and structure to be conquered. Martial arts stress relief have many benefits for your body.

This is an informative article that applies directly to Wing Chun and the the benefits of Wing Chun on your mental health, emotional stress and daily frustration; though these benefits can be quite vast we hope you enjoy reading this article on the martial arts mental benefits on stress of Wing Chun. Martial arts stress relief developed you body and mind.

Cultivation of the mind is just as important in Wing Chun as the physical toughening and dedication it takes to become a master. A master of Wing Chun understands that harmony of the mind and body will make he/she faster, better to react, and well centered. The activities we choose to participate in can lead to a better quality of life, will they build us up physically, mentally or will they build a combination of character, cultivating a new you that is well rounded and full of possibilities and life. Martial arts should be more than just a workout, it should allow you to achieve a mental focus, concentration and relief from the daily stresses of life, family, work, and trauma. Martial arts stress relief is a great form of stress relief. These foundations have been sewn into the very fabric of Wing Chun from its roots in chinese culture, shaolin temple kung fu training and its need for a holistic approach to raise the mind and body to new heights. Martial arts stress relief achieved many benefits for your body. This lifestyle of martial arts stress relief  training is so sleight and yet can have far reaching results. If you can spend an hour or two on yourself once or twice a week you can have a alternative improvement in both you mental and physical attitude, stress and emotional reactions to those around you. You will be surprised at what a healthy turn in events can accomplish, by focusing and harmonizing your mind into positive stress reliefs you will achieve and succeed.

Health Focus on your Mind, Emotions and Character

No self defense skill taught by any martial art can lower your stress and bring you mental health without the focus on the individual, there character, philosophy and ethic morality. These things are keys to realizing, accepting and conquering ones frustrations, anger, emotional problems, rivalry, vices, fears and intimidation. Martial arts practice works well as a form of martial arts stress relief. A focused mind can rise above, a focused mind and body can encourage a new or old martial art practitioner to new levels of serious thought and goals. Martial arts stress relief also focus on your mind development. If you want t relief your stress, then you should be focus on martial arts stress relief. As a individual gains character development in the martial arts and increases his role in his own world and how it interacts with those around; this practitioner of the martial arts will display a leadership quality and courage never known. They will become a light for those who are still lost and looking, the will defend the defenseless, they will bring with them a knowledge and an experience they developed through hardship and knowing both sides of the coin, both sides of that world. Though until that day, you work on yourself and may become a sight or goal for others for as people watch your progress they will see it as a truly possible goal for themselves. You can create wellness for your body by doing martial arts stress relief. Everyone gets frustrated, everyone gets into slumps, but a cultivated mind, a mind on improvement follows a goal oriented practitioner. Martial arts stress relief have a number of benefits in your life.  Wing Chun was developed to strengthen and enlighten the whole of the practitioner and bring the confrontations of the world, mind and body into focus so that a person could protect all aspects of what they find and see as precious.

Stress as some say is the mind killer, take stress in your life seriously. Martial arts stress relief is a most useful way to reduce your stress level. An over stressed and over pressured lifestyle can cut down sleep, increase drinking, smoking or even cause unintentional pressure on ones family life, interaction, relationships and friends. Though the direct psychological and physiological effects of extreme and excessive stress can be astounding. The links between stress and heart disease, lower immune system and even sexual function have been well established. As stress increases your blood pressure rises and places tension and more stress on the arterial walls damaging and scaring them. As the arteries attempt to heal this damage and scar tissue builds up, this in combination with increased blood pressure over time reduces supplies of blood and nutrients to the heart, vital organs and body. Martial arts stress relief is a bast way to pump up your energy. Stress hormones also accelerate the heart to then increase blood supply to the muscles and vital organs. This acceleration in conjunction with pressure, scar tissue, arterial plaque for poor or imperfect diet and nutrition and blood vessel damage can all be cause for a heart attack. People younger and younger are now getting heart attacks, a student of mine who is a Western Doctor told me of a 26 year old friend of his who just had one. Stress effects everything, your immune system lowers leaving you susceptible to colds and could even intensify symptoms. Stress has been linked to anxiety, fear and depression. Martial arts stress relief is very useful for your body’s blood circulation. Stress is now being associated with intensified symptoms in autoimmune, rheumatoid arthritis, stomach ulcers, headaches, and even cancer. The complete effects of stress are still being researched and debated but what is clear is that if you do not do something now, you might ask yourself later why you didn’t.

Wing Chun; a natural way to relieve anxiety

Skills, power, strength and sacrifice satisfy the demands of the ego, mind, confidence and body, they are demands to that increase our physical defense and ethics that make us grow. A martial arts stress relief  practitioner should be trained to beable to defend and protect those that come to harm and protect themselves from situations they may come across. That means that a martial arts stress relief practitioner is not a accumulation of fancy moves but rather useful techniques that can be employed. Wing Chun views fancy techniques in the martial arts as non-useful and more for the artist in marital then the martial in the art. I bring this up because to often do we see schools and centers that claim they teach self defense, but the truth is they show years of fancy movements without a single effort on the character development of the mind or body. There are many students who relief their stress by martial arts stress relief. They speak of great character, great power and ancient lineage of combat but the truth is many of these schools not only don’t teach it but string there students along with fancy techniques, fancy words and the promise of something more much much later.

I bring this up because a student of 18 years under another martial art (not stated out of respect) joined our school and told me they were shown more effective techniques in one week then in all the time they were training. They had spent so much time only to realize that they were not gaining anything mentally or physically except a new belt and a pat on the back.

The truth is practicing the martial arts can reduce your stress, though it sounds like a physically stressful activity , this regiment of training will allow you to set goals and deal with your stresses positively. You will find that this stress relief is a very natural way to control and focus your energy. Students don’t usually realize it coming in but the this instruction allows you to redirect and concentrate on those things that aren’t stressful and wearing on your mind and body. Wing Chun martial arts stress relief  classes are very structured, they start out with core and conditioning training, increasing your cardiovascular system, building your whole body including your abdominal muscles, arms, legs, heart and overall health. Martial arts stress relief is a natural way to relief your stress. Then Wing Chun brings you into focus mitt training and drills for your hands, kicking and punching with and without resistance training. These practices in class are done with partners and friends, forms and chi gong (a technique of breathing and moving in slow motion not of mysticism) is taught, it clears your mind, focuses your intentions and precision. Then techniques of your level are taught, as you progress you are taught more to build upon what you have accomplished. You can relief your stress by doing martial arts stress relief. Then many students do reflex training, sparring, or even shadow boxing depending on the level they wish to train and build upon. Many students feel a sense of relief, they even go home and tell me they sleep like babies (the non-screaming kind, you know the kind that your like… man that baby is out.. yes, that kind of sleep). In these types of martial arts stress relief  classes you can let yourself go, you can get a sense of mental improvement and stress relief. It is a holistic approach, a whole mind and body legacy you are about to create, dedicate and accomplish for yourself.

Low Impact Martial Arts Training For Any Age

Low Impact Martial Arts for any age

low impact martial artsLow impact martial arts for any age. Wing Chun practitioners are known for their ability to train in thier complete style into the later years of life without pain or discomfort. Not many combative martial arts can claim that. Many styles of martial arts put immense pressure on the joints, bones, tendons, and ligaments such as the shoulders, knees, neck and back of the practitioner.

“if you can go grocery shopping, kick a cart and grab items off of shelves, then you can do Wing Chun!”

Wing Chun provides low impact martial arts training with highly effective application and can be used at any age.

The modern founder of Wing Chun (Ip Man) has two sons that are still training to this day. Ip Ching and Ip Chun are in their late 80’s and early 90’s. Martial arts training and classes will be remembered for a lifetime. You will recall there low impact martial arts teachings and instructions, should they not also be able to be trained for just as long? Wing Chun can and will have you doing so just like so many practitioners of the martial art of Wing Chun before you, this is not legend but fact. Wing Chun or low impact martial arts does not concentrate on large high kicks, jumping techniques or any fancy movements that may strain or stress your joints, back, neck or limbs. Wing Chun doesn’t want you leaving the ground, the best balance and stability you have now and in your later years is with your feet on the ground. At the Sifu Och School of Wing Chun Kung Fu we tell people; “if you can go grocery shopping, grabbing food with your hands and kick your cart forward with your feet, you can Master Wing Chun, not just practice it.”

This is an informative article specifically on Wing Chun and its benefits as  low impact martial arts. This article talks about taking the reasons behind its power in Low impact martial arts, its ability to extend your training into the later years of life because of its low impact on the joints, knee, neck, back, muscles and tendons. (this article can not be copied or used on any other site)

The style of Wing Chun is compact and extremely effective at any age, from children, teens, men, women and even older individuals. Even Ip Man the Modern Founder of Wing Chun (Ving Tsun Gung Fu) started learning at the age of 13 years old from his Master Chan Wah Shun, Chan Wah Shun was 70 years old at the time he taught Ip Man. The style of low impact martial arts Wing Chun was made so no matter what your confrontation whether it was in a parking lot, alley, your home, bathroom or telephone booth you could use it. Training is on quick reaction with the hands and feet, with the legs kicking low to the opponent’s knees, thighs, groin or at highest the ribs. No pre-stretching needed or involved you won’t be kicking at the head or running across the room to hit a target in mid-air. Though learning high kicks and stretching is great flexibility, generates great power and is apart of any martial arts training, worrying about executing a jumping crescent kick, 6 foot high roundhouse or flying side kick is not Wing Chun’s focus and at the age of 90, Wing Chun doesn’t think it will be yours either. We train low impact martial arts for the betterment of you and your body, but we also do it because the effectiveness of direct offense and defense is astounding at any age of training and learning.

Low Impact Styles & Mastering Your Well Being

There are an assortment of different Low impact martial arts systems and methods of combat training available today, each style has its own history and reasons for its development. Wing Chun is no different but the history of Wing Chun Kung Fu, the reasons for its development and why practitioners such as Bruce Lee trained it as a staple of there protection and self preservation are discussions for another low impact martial arts article. Many people classify low impact and meditative martial arts styles in only a few categories; Tai Chi, Yoga, Chi Gong and Baguazhang. Sadly many Kung Fu styles like Wing Chun are dismissed even though the culture and centuries old history of the martial arts tells us otherwise. Kung Fu was the combination of soft and hard, of internal harmony with the external body, though used for combative protection and self defense kung fu was known for much more. The breathing techniques, fitness, endurance, spiritual and mental peace, relaxation and increased life expectancy were all attributed to training in Kung Fu. As stated Wing Chun has a large history of elderly practitioners still fully capable of both mind and body, training daily. There is no doubt that the martial arts has a positive impact on the lives it touches. The unfortunate thing about most schools and instructors in various styles of kung fu such as Tai Chi, Internal and External Wing Chun Fist, Chi Gong, Baguazhang is finding a truly knowledgeable Master. There are so few knowledgeable instructors that can teach you all the aspects of both sides of the low impact martial arts that most “instructors” you come across can only teach body movement. The difference between a knowledgeable Master in the style and an instructor who only knows how to make similar looking movements is like comparing a glass of stale water to Nigra Falls . You may drink from the glass of stale water and think it was good, until you see and feel the potential behind Nigra Falls.

low impact martial arts styles openly practice and emphasize internal power and its uses in breathing, fitness, consistent movement, self defense and the discipline of mastering ones own body and mind. For individuals who are looking for the stress relief, internal power, spiritual side and focused discipline Wing Chun has you in mind. Styles of martial arts are made to improve health, increase self defense and retain energy, vitality and vigor. Wing Chun is not a style of fancy movements or point sparring it is an adaptive style of kung fu martial arts that can help increase focus, sensitivity, endurance, reaction and flexibility. Wing Chun is a low impact style of martial arts that puts competitive egos, bullying and prides at the door. Almost all styles of martial arts were originally created for combat self defense, though martial arts today are now seperated into different categories that focus on the practitioner and what they are looking to accomplish to better there lives. low impact martial arts exercise focused on the well-being of the stylist is everyone’s concern.

There are numerous amounts of styles and methods of Low impact martial arts in many different categories in the world today.

Inner Balance and low impact martial arts

From stand up fighting styles of striking, kicking to grappling or ground fighting styles, throwing, chi na locking, takedown styles, weapon based styles of fighting, new age MMA sports styles to meditative styles of martial arts. Striking styles such as Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kickboxing, Capoeira, Kung Fu, Krav Maga, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, Tang Soo Do and Silat use stand up striking techniques as there primary weapons of offense and defense. The degree to which the aspects of kicks, punches, head butts, knees and elbows are used depends on the style of stand up self defense. Styles of low impact martial arts are so different it is sometimes confusing to think that most people place them into three categories; Karate, Tae Kwon Do or Jiujitsu. Even the difference in grappling or ground fighting styles that focus on submissions, locks and dominant ground positioning differ greatly. Brazilian Jiujitsu made famous by the Gracie Family of Brazil is much different then other style of ground self defense such as catch wrestling, shoot fighting, Russian Sambo and Sumo wrestling. Combat always starts from a standing position, Wing Chun believes in the use of throws, takedowns, chi na and controlling techniques though the primary focus for Wing Chun is striking and controlling techniques. Similar techniques are seen within Hapkido, Japanese Judo, Aikido, Chinese Shuai Jiao. low impact martial arts that are also considered meditative styles of the martial arts have been reduced down to Baguazhang, Tai Chi and Chi Gong, this excludes so many other styles of low impact martial arts that if chosen to could show and teach a low impact and meditative components. Wing Chun’s three empty hand forms are known for there internal Chi Gong aspects and standing meditation technique but are rarely considered because they do not have the name Chi Gong or Tai Chi attached to them. Wing Chun could also be known as the last Chinese Mixed Martial Art to come out of the Shaolin Temple. Though unlike many other styles of mixed martial arts known today it was made by and influenced by five different masters. Wing Chun was also created to be a complete street and war combat martial art, with the inclusion of both offense and defense techniques. Wing Chun’s mixed low impact martial arts includes a complete style with knife, stick, dragon long pole, swords, shaolin muscle and bone conditioning tools such as the Wooden Dummy, leg fighting, sensitivity drills, blind fold training, trapping, chi na, kicking and striking techniques. How often do you hear of a style that can teach and have so much at the fingertips of its practitioner’s, many styles focus on one side or thought of martial combat, Wing Chun is like learning and mastering five arts at once no wonder it was sought out and used in Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee, Krav Maga, Vee-Jitsu, and other schools that have taken pieces of it to make there style of MMA (mixed martial arts) better and more powerful. Though most mixed martial arts today are seen as sport styles for tournament and cage training, fighting and practice. Wing Chun is a term of MMA that refers to the complete flow of southern shaolin chinese martial arts, a hybrid in acient and modern times, using striking, trapping and control as its base. Wing Chun is a style of adapt utilized mental conceptual techniques, graphed in scientific body mechanics and trained for direct efficiency and rapid reactionary offense and defense. With so many styles to choose from Wing Chun utilizes and uplifts the low impact call for prolonged fighting, protection and health. It respects the the aforementioned styles while carving out a specialized category of its own, popularized by Ip Man the grandmaster of Wing Chun in Hong Kong and his students Bruce Lee, Ip Ching, Ip Chun, Simon Lau and the Legendary Wong Shun Leung. It uses low impact resistance training with weapons much like the styles of Iaido or Kendo, or the Bokken (wooden sword) of Goju-ryu Karate and the Escrima (short double sticks) of Kali. But unlike these Wing Chun has a unique flavor for the soft and hard, the fast and powerful that gives it a taste unlike any other style of martial arts. Even those who have trained for years in other styles, decades in dedication see the effectiveness, efficiency and love for such a style that blesses its practitioner’s with direct, simple and complete systematic and scientific techniques.
